It takes approximately two hours each way for residents inBelmont to take the bus to the Health Department on Billingsley Road. Plusresident must still walk 3/4 of a mile from the bus stop to the building.- Expansion of Success By 6, community-based social workers, nurses, police andother service workers can improve access to services and promote collaborationamong service providers.5. Establish a partnership with a preschool/parenting education program serving at-riskfamilies and support it through:It financial and in-kind donationsIt release ~e of employees for volunteeringIt sharing technical expertise in business operations, such as accounting,organizational planning and computer applications.- There are approximately 50 nonprofit preschool and parenting programs servinga high percentage of at-risk students. Few partnerships with businesses andcommunity groups currently exist.6. Support the establishment of an on-going Child Watch effort in the community toenable others to see first-hand the problems facing at-risk children and to join efforts towork for positive changes.- Personally seeing the plight of at-risk children can increase commitment toaction that will benefit children and the entire community.- Visiting programs that are successful helps community leaders know (1) thatthere are programs that work and (2) what kinds of programs should besupported with public and private dollars.140
