www.anitagoodesignonline.comEMBROIDERY DESIGNS • EVENTS • EDUCATIONTMFebruary 2013Volume 17February Releases“Sports Fishing”Diamond ClubAt every event Ireceive requestsfor realistic animaldesigns or realisticnature scenes.Among the requestsare for fishingand sports fishingdesigns. The requestis always followedwith “make surethey look realistic.”I take everysuggestion seriouslyand this one hasbeen in my notebookfor a while. The firstedition of SportFishing contains 10 different realistic designs forthe large hoops. Each design comes in a version thatis 7”x12” or 6”x10” and they all include a variationfor the 5” x 7” hoop. Most of the fish use appliquéas a background to help keep stitches down andprevent the design from sinking into the fabric. For our project we stitched the design on a manssweatshirt. The designs would also look great onhome decor items like pillows and accessories liketote bags.“Fresh Flowers”Mini Mix & Match/ Quilting ClubFor thiscollection Iwanted to createdesigns thatused quiltingstitches in thebackground andwere coveredwith flowers thatwhen stitchedtogether createlong strips ofquilted andfloral stripes. There are 15unique blocksthat can bestitched togetherin unlimited combinations. Half of theflowers are appliqué and the other halfare fully stitched. Both types of blocks canbe combined together. The designs can becombined to create quilts, wall hangings, bedspreads and even pillows and place mats.“Teapots”Mini/ Diamond ClubThis was a collectionWhat’s more fun thana collection of teapots!Instead of designinga collection of plainteapots we decidedto fill each one witha beautiful scene! There are 15 differentteapots in all andeach one comes in 2different sizes, 5”x7”and 6”x10”. Thesedesigns will look greaton sweatshirts, teatowels, pot holdersor any other kitchenaccessory.“Mylar Spring”Mix & Match/ Quilting ClubIf you embroider andare quilter you areprobably like me andlike anything shiny! We all love metallicthread, shiny fabricand crystals. If youlike those thingsyou will love thenew Mylar Springcollection. Mylar isa very shiny plasticmaterial that youwill immediatelyrecognize fromballoons you’vepurchased at partystores. You canorder Mylar online in a huge assortment ofcolors. These quilt blocks have been specificallydesigned for Mylar but you can use any fabricwith them. The question you are going to askis about laundering and care. I recommendwashing the designs on delicate or even betterhand washing them with a mild detergent. Donot iron directly on the Mylar or put the blocksin a dryer. The heat will cause the plastic toshrink. I recommend doing a laundry test onone of the blocks so you can see the results. There are 20 different main blocks as wellas 7 different border designs. You can makeanything from a pillow to a large quilt using allof the designs.2

www.anitagoodesignonline.comTips, Tricks & IdeasEMBROIDERY DESIGNS • EVENTS • EDUCATIONHere at Anita Goodesign we are always looking for the latest trends in the world ofembroidery. We have noticed that embroidery on clothing is making a come back! So, that inspired us to give you some tips for embroidering on garments. We alsohave a product line titled Anita Goodesign Fashion Collections. Go to our websiteand take a look at all of our beautiful fashion collections. These collections weredesigned with fashion clothing in mind and the designs were all tested on garmentsto guarantee perfect embroidery results. Here are some of our fashion rules and tips.1. Start with a quality garmentThe better the garment, the better your end result will be. Cheap clothing generallydoesn’t have good sewing techniques to begin with and are made using cheaper grades offabric which don’t hold embroidery well.2. Don’t be afraid to use your seam ripper!A lot of the techniques we use will require you to open up seams and literally take yourgarment apart. You have an embroidery machine that costs thousand of dollars don’t beafraid to rip apart a $50.00 pair of jeans. Besides, ripping it apart is easy, its putting it backtogether that’s tough!3. Experiment!Creating your own custom garment will require experimenting with different fabrics andembellishing techniques. Don’t be afraid to try something new. These are the techniques that will help you with your FashionEmbroidery.1. Working with Fabrics2. Stabilizers3. Combining Multiple Embroideries4. Using Templates5. Creating Free Standing Embroideries6. Standard Applique(TIP OF THE MONTH)7. Leather & Raw Edge Applique8. Reverse Applique9. Embroidery on FabricTMFebruary 2013Volume 17Leather & Raw Edge Applique TechniquesApplique does not just apply to Fashion and garments;it can be on any kind of embroidery project. www.anitagoodesignonline.comEMBROIDERY DESIGNS • EVENTS • EDUCATIONTMFebruary 2013Volume 17Leather & Raw Edge Applique TechniquesTips, Tricks & IdeasIf you look at contemporary clothing you will see distressing techniques used often. We’vealso been noticing leather used a lot in applique designs and in the garment constructionitself. A lot of you may be afraid to work with leather or don’t have any experience withit. This section of the tutorial will show you how to do both leather applique and raw edgeapplique. The design we are using is from our Glamour Rocks Fashion collection. This designis perfect to demonstrate both techniques because it is a double applique. The first technique used in this designis raw edge applique. When the designreached the first applique section you willsee an outline stitch in the shape of thefirst applique sew out.Now its time to trim the first applique.Carefully remove the hoop from the machineand place on a flat table for trimming. Use apair of applique scissors and cut around thewhole applique. The width of the edge youleave will determine how much the appliquewill curl or fray. Always trim a little wider, you can always go back and trim more later.Lay your applique fabric so that it completelycovers the outline stitch area. For this appliquewe used a novelty knit that almost looks typedyed. If you use a knit for raw edge applique itwill curl when washed, if you use a woven itwill fray. Once the fabric is in place stitch thenext step. This is called the tacking stitch andit will hold the fabric in place.Return the hoop to your machine andembroider until you reach the next applique.6

www.anitagoodesignonline.comEMBROIDERY DESIGNS • EVENTS • EDUCATIONTMFebruary 2013Volume 17Leather & Raw Edge Applique TechniquesTips, Tricks & IdeasThe first step of the leather appliquewill be an outline stitch again. Once thisstitch embroiders lay your leather downso it completely covers the outline stitch. Now its time to trim the leatherapplique. Carefully remove the hoopfrom the machine and place on aflat table for trimming. Use a pair ofapplique scissors and cut around thewhole applique. You will want to trimthis closer than the raw edge applique.Tips for working with leather.1. Use thin leather, thick leather is tough to stitchdown and cut. If you search online you will findplenty of websites that sell leather scraps in dozensof colors.2. Leather only works with designs with a runningstitch outline. Satin stitch outlines will perforatethe leather.3. Washing the leather won’t harm the skin, howeverdrying it will. Do not put items with leatherapplique on them in the dryer, air dry your garment. The next step will tack the leather in place. The finished design.Jacket from our fashion collectionGlamour Rocks. This design andtechnique could be used on any projectof your choosing!7
