The coordinated dual degrees inbusiness and foreign languages provide coordinated advising, registration, andpossible internship opportunities for students seeking a bachelor of science in businessadministration and a bachelor of arts with a major in foreign languages. SeeSection 6 for details.HistoryStarting with the initial charter of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong> by the Legislature in1 867, the liberal arts and the sciences were an important and central element of the<strong>University</strong>. The College of Arts and Sciences was formally created in 1895, and elevenstudents received degrees from the College in 1896. In the 191 1-12 academic year,the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was established within the College ofArts and Sciences.Today, the College of Arts and Sciences awards degrees to over 1 ,000 studentsevery year. It remains the heart of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong>, providing students with aliberal education in the areas of literature and the humanities, mathematics and naturalsciences, and social and behavioral sciences. In addition to teaching, the College's300 faculty members are actively engaged in research and scholarship, publishingapproximately 300 articles and 25 books each year.College of Arts and Sciences 87
