The summer experiences acquaint students with management of park andrecreation enterprises.Bachelor of Science in RecreationRecreation and Parks Management CurriculumThe recreation and parks management curriculum is designed to prepare you fora career providing recreation opportunities in the public sector, with private or commercialagencies, or in a therapeutic setting. Whichever option you choose, we require 136hours to complete the program. A large core of recreation classes insures employabilrtybeyond the limits of each option.An information booklet and option advising sheets are available from the Recreationand Parks Management Office, Division of Forestry, 329 Percival Hall, P.O. Box6125, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Morgantown, WV 26506-6125. These will help youprepare appropriate course schedules.In the freshman year, you may enroll in Re. & Pk. 43 Leisure and Human Behaviorand Re. & Pk. 44 Introduction to Recreation and Park Services. At the end of thejunior year, you must complete an approved, full-time internship of not less than eightweeks with a recreation agency. Therapeutic recreation internships last at least tenweeks, and must be supervised by a certified recreation specialist. Eachoption is developed from a core of recreation classes which establishes a basicprofessional proficiency. Additional competencies may be developed through thecareful selection of electives.Administration and Planning. This option provides preparation for general entryinto the parks and recreation career field. Course work enables you to qualify forpositions of increasing operational, supervisory, planning, and managerial responsibility.Course work emphasizes the planning, organizing, and delivery of recreation andparks services in a variety of settings. This preparation is strengthened by the inclusionof classes in political science, economics, accounting, management, forestry, landscapearchitecture, and the behavioral sciences.Therapeutic Recreation. This option prepares you to plan and provide comprehensivetherapeutic recreation services. These services include: treatment, which usesactivities to improve functional abilities; leisure education, which uses activities toacquire skills, knowledge and attitudes that facilitate an independent leisure life-style;and participation, which provides recreation activities for leisure enjoyment.
