3.The administrative procedure is not adversarial in nature; the formal rules ofevidence do not apply.4.Witnesses may be called by any of the parties involved.5.A record of the appeal shall be prepared in the form of summary minutes andrelevant attachments and will be provided to any of the parties involved uponwritten request.The <strong>University</strong> Committee on Student Rights and Responsibilities will reach adecision within 7 days. The committee's recommendation for dismissal must bereviewed by the appropriate Vice President, who may confirm or remand the recommendationwith specific instructions. Prior to the decision of the Vice President, thestudent will be given an opportunity to discuss the appeal with the Vice President.Within 15 calendar days of a recommendation for dismissal confirmed by the VicePresident, the student may appeal to the President. The decision of the President isfinal.Academic Integrity/DishonestyThe academic development of students and the overall integrity of the institutionare primary responsibilities of WVU. Academic dishonesty is condemned at all levelsof life, indicating an inability to meet and face issues and creating an atmosphere ofmistrust, disrespect, and insecurity. In addition, it is essential in an academic communitythat grades accurately reflect the attainment of the individual student. Faculty,students, and administrators have shared responsibilities in maintaining the academicintegrity essential for the <strong>University</strong> to accomplish its mission.ResponsibilitiesStudents should act to prevent opportunities for academic dishonesty to occur,and in such a manner to discourage any type of academic dishonesty.Faculty members are expected to remove opportunities for cheating, whether relatedto test construction, test confidentiality, test administration, or test grading. This sameprofessional care should be exercised with regard to oral and written reports, laboratoryassignments, and grade books.Deans and department chairpersons are expected to acquaint all faculty withexpected professional behavior regarding academic integrity, and to continue toremind them of their responsibility. Deans and department chairpersons shall assistfaculty members and students in handling first- offense cheating allegations at thelowest possible level in the <strong>University</strong>, and with discretion to prevent damage to thereputation of any person who has not been found guilty in the prescribed manner.Each member of the teaching faculty and all other WVU employees, including butnot limited to assistants, proctors, office personnel, custodians, and public safetyofficers, shall promptly report each known case of academic dishonesty to the appropriatesupervisor, department chairperson, or dean of the college or school concerned,and to the Office of Judicial Programs, Office of Student Life.Academic Dishonesty Defined<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong> expects that every member of its academic communityshares the historic and traditional commitment to honesty, integrity, and the search fortruth. Academic dishonesty is defined to include but is not limited to any of thefollowing:1 . Plagiarism: To take and pass off as one's own the ideas, writings, artisticproducts, etc. of someone else; for example, submitting, without appropriateacknowledgement, a report, notebook, speech, outline, theme, thesis, dissertation, orother written, visual, or oral material that has been knowingly obtained or copied inwhole or in part, from the work of others, whether such source is published, includingPolicies 43
