.dean's recommendation, or if the student is in disagreement with the decision of thedean, the dean will refer the case to a representative committee, appointed by thedean, for final resolution. This committee shall consist of three or more faculty members,including at least one person outside the instructor's discipline.1 Upon receiving an appeal, the committee will notify in writing the facultymember involved of the grade challenge, which shall include a statement of the factsand evidence to be presented by the student.2. The committee shall provide to the faculty member involved and the studentmaking the appeal written notification of their right to appear at a hearing to be heldbefore the department or college or school representative committee, together with thenotice of the date, time, and place of the hearing.3. The administrative procedure is not adversarial in nature; the formal rules ofevidence do not apply.4. The final decision of this committee shall be forwarded to the instructor and tothe dean involved. If the decision requires a change of grade, the instructor shall takeaction in accordance with the committee's decision.5. If the instructor does not act within five days, the dean shall make any necessarygrade adjustment.6. In the case of grade appeals, the dean functions as the President's designee;therefore, implementation of this decision shall end the appeal procedure.AbsencesIf you are absent from class for any reason, you are responsible for allwork that you missed. Absences may jeopardize your grade(s) in that class or possiblythe ability to continue in that course. Instructors are responsible for keeping anaccurate record of students enrolled in their classes and their attendance. If aninstructor uses attendance records in determining the final grade in a course, then thisfact must be announced to the students in writing within the first five class meetings.Absence from ExaminationsYou are required to take all regular examinations in a course. If you attend acourse all semester but you do not take the final examination and you do not have theinstructor's permission to miss it, the instructor may give you a grade of zero for theexamination and report a grade of F for the course. If, however, the instructor believesyour absence was necessary, he/she has the option to report a grade of incomplete (I).If your absence from a regularly scheduled examination was due to illness, anauthorized <strong>University</strong> activity, or another reason approved by your dean, you have theopportunity to make up the examination.Withdrawals From ClassesDeadlines: Until the Friday of the tenth week of class (or Friday of the fourth week in asix-week summer session, or Friday of the second week of a three-week summersession), students may withdraw from individual courses. Deadlines are published inthe <strong>University</strong> Schedule of Courses each semester. If you follow all established<strong>University</strong> procedures and withdraw before the published deadline, you will receive aW on your transcript. Grade-point averages are not affected in any way by this mark.Procedures:1 . Before withdrawing from individual classes, consult your adviser to determine:• Whether your course load would be reduced below the minimal requirementsset by your college or school. If so, you must get permission from the Committee onAcademic Standards of your college or school before you submit the course adjustmentform.• Whether your course load would be reduced below the minimal number of hoursrequired to qualify for financial aid, varsity athletic competition, or international full-timestudent status;Absences 37
