Basic Course (Freshmen and Sophomores Only)The Basic Course of instruction is for freshman and sophomore students whodesire to investigate the possibilities of future government service without committingthemselves to a military service obligation. The basic course class may be added ordropped as any other courses in the <strong>University</strong>. Credits earned in ROTC count towardlower-level academic requirements. Additionally, the student gains a social awarenessand develops personal values important in civilian life. Uniforms are not required in thebasic course.Advanced Course (Juniors-Seniors-Veterans)Selected students may participate in Advanced ROTC. It is required of all studentswho have an ROTC scholarship. Successful completion of the advanced coursemeans earning a reserve commission as a second lieutenant in one of the fifteenbranches of the Army which require over 300 occupational skills.Advanced Course AllowancesAdvanced Course students without an ROTC scholarship are given the samesubsistence allowance as scholarship students. This allowance provides the studentwith $100 per month during the academic year.Advanced Summer CampBefore commissioning, a student must attend an advanced summer camp of sixweeks duration between the junior and senior years. Cadets receive travel allowancesand pay equal to one-half the basic pay of a second lieutenant.Leadership LaboratoryFreshman-SophomoreLeadership training for freshman and sophomore students is challenging andadventurous. It provides opportunity for students to participate in action-orientedactivities which develop self-confidence and self-discipline while encouraging theemerging leader. Rappelling, cross- country skiing, land navigation, and orientationvisits to U.S. Army installations are some of the student's choices for participation. Anaverage of one hour a week is required.Junior-SeniorLeadership instruction is applied by the student in a working laboratory environment.Emphasis is placed on small-unit tactics, drill and ceremonies, physical training,rifle familiarization, and preparation for Advanced Summer Camp.Two-Year Program (Sophomore and Transfer Students)Selected applicants are enrolled in a two-year program that leads to an Armycommission. The two-year student attends a six-week Basic ROTC Camp. Uponsuccessful completion of this requirement, the student may enter the Advanced ROTCProgram and complete the requirements for an officer commission during the tworemaining years in school. Transfer students desiring to enter this program shouldcontact the Professor of Military Science, Stansbury Hall, <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong>,Morgantown, WV 26506, before March 31 when planning to enter the <strong>University</strong> in thefirst semester. WVU sophomores considering participation should contact the ArmyROTC office early in the second semester.Military HistoryContracted students must take History 110 Modem Military History. The classexplores military history from the seventeenth century to the present and includes astudy of major world wars and contemporary military alliances.
