Their preparation includes the acquisition of knowledge and skills from a vastarray of movement activities in addition to an understanding of associated physiological,biomechanical, sociological, psychological, historical, philosophical, andpedogogical principles. Preparation in athletic training is designed to enable studentsto prevent and treat injuries related to athletic competition. Students in safety developcompetencies which enable them to use innovative approaches in the conduct ofsafety and driver instructional activities. Their preparation is designed to developfoundation skills and knowledge related to accident prevention. Health educationstudents investigate health issues and concerns related to the individual and society,and examine institutions and agencies dedicated to promoting good health.Graduates in physical education with teaching and coaching certification aregenerally employed as elementary or secondary physical education teachers andathletic coaches. Graduates in sport studies are employed in professional andcollegiate sport enterprises, fitness centers, recreation programs, sporting goodsstores, commercial sporting goods manufacturers; others are employed as sportwriters, sport broadcasters, or sport counsellors. Graduates in safety studies areemployed as driver and traffic safety educators or traffic safety specialists in governmentbusiness and industry. Graduates in health education may be employed aselementary or secondary classroom health educators, community health educators,wellness center consultants, corporate health educators, health agency educators, orin state or county health departments.ProgramsBaccalaureate degree programs offered in the School of Physical Educationinclude teacher certification in physical education, health education, and traffic safetyprograms and sport studies with an emphasis in sport management, sport physiology,and sport behavior (psychology/sociology). Certification is available in athletic training,athletic coaching, and dance.FacilitiesFacilities of the School of Physical Education include the gymnasium, dancestudio, and swimming pool in E. Moore Hall; a gymnasium in Stansbury Hall; bowlinglanes and game rooms in Mountainlair; indoor track, sports area, weight training room,martial arts room, and rifle range in the Shell Building; outdoor areas including thestadium, tennis courts, archery range, soccer and field hockey fields, and outdoortrack; and the Natatorium with its pool and diving well.The Coliseum contains the Ray O. Duncan Memorial Library, classrooms andseminar rooms, a large gymnasium, a dance studio, racquetball and squash courts,traffic safety laboratory, human factors research laboratories, and faculty offices.278 School of Physical Education
