Such courses may apply toward a baccalaureatedegree at WVU if they are the equivalent of a course at WVU. You may alsotransfer credit for college-parallel courses taken at community colleges or juniorcolleges that are not a part of the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> system of higher education. However,you will receive credit only for those courses for which you have earned a grade of Cor higher. The hours that you transfer from a community college or junior college arenormally limited to a maximum of 72 hours of lower-division courses.Residence RequirementsIf you decide to transfer to WVU from another institution of higherlearning, then you should transfer no later than the start of your third year. Under nocircumstances will a student who enters WVU after October 1 in any year be allowedto receive a degree at the next commencement.In some special cases, you can leave WVU at the end of your third year, and stillreceive your degree from WVU. You must enter another accredited institution with thepurpose of taking a combined program that will lead to two degrees or prepare forgraduate study. Before you leave, you must apply to the Academic Standards Committeeof your college to request permission to do the work of the fourth year, or a partthereof, at the other institution but still receive the degree from WVU. You will receiveyour degree when you present the proper records from the other school.If you are a transfer student who has completed all of your undergraduate work inanother school in the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> system of higher education, then you mustcomplete either your last 30 hours of work at WVU or at least 36 hours of work at WVUof which 1 6 of the last 32 hours must be on campus. If you are a transfer studentwhose undergraduate work has been completed outside the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> system ofhigher education, then you must complete a total of 90 hours or at least the last 30hours of work in residence at WVU. You may be required to earn up to 15 hours inyour major field regardless of the number of hours or the nature of the coursestransferred.Work Done Out of ResidenceIt is WVU's policy to discourage taking regular residence courses inabsentia. If you begin a course at WVU but fail to complete it due to illness or someother acceptable reason, you may receive permission to complete the work in absen-26 <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong>
