(WVU), Professor and Program Director.Degree OfferedBachelor of Science in Medical TechnologyNature of ProgramThe undergraduate program in medical technology is administered by the Schoolof Medicine. Students are admitted into the bachelor of science program after completingtwo years of premedical technology in an accredited college or university. TheWVU Medical Technology Program is accredited by the Committee on Allied HealthEducation and Accreditation of the American Medical Association. Graduates areeligible for certification by the Board of Registry of the American Society of ClinicalPathologists (ASCP) and by the National Certification Agency for Medical LaboratoryPersonnel (NCA).The undergraduate curriculum includes the premedical technology program,which is offered in the WVU College of Arts and Sciences and at Potomac StateCollege in Keyser, and the medical technology program offered in the School ofMedicine.Since the last two years are professional in nature, students must be enrolled inthe WVU School of Medicine for this entire period. The work of the junior year (the firstyear in the medical technology program) includes courses to introduce the student tothe medical sciences and courses to prepare the student for the work of the senioryear. During the senior year (the second year in the medical technology program), thestudent receives both didactic instruction and practical experience in Ruby MemorialHospital laboratories (WVU Hospitals, Inc.). Students may be required to fill part oftheir clinical rotations at an extramural site in <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>.Certified TechniciansA program is available for certified medical laboratory technicians who desire tocomplete requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree. Further information may beobtained by contacting the Medical Technology Program Office.A part-time curriculum is available for the third and fourth years of the program.Students must meet the admission requirements and application deadlines for full-timestudents. For further information, contact the Medical Technology Program Office.Admission to the Pre-Medical Technology ProgramStudents in the pre-medical technology program must meet the admission criteriaof <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong> and are advised by the Academic Advising Center.Qualified applicants may enter the pre-medical technology program at the beginning ofany semester, but the professional sequence outlined is based on entrance in the fallsemester of year three. Admission to the pre-medical technology program does notassure admission to the professional program. We recommend that prospectivestudents take mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology in high school.Do not take courses such as bacteriology, parasitology, and anatomy until youcomplete the sophomore year. We recommend a foreign language for students whoplan to do graduate work.Admission to the Professional ProgramRequirements for admission to the medical technology programs includes courserequirements, grade-point average, a personal interview, letters of recommendation,and scores on the Allied Health Professions Admission Test (AHPAT).258 School of Medicine
