tional backgrounds and professional experience with newspapers, the wire services,radio and television, public relations firms, advertising agencies, major corporations,and governmental agencies.The various areas of specialization provide realistic outlets for students' interests.Student reporters and editors are introduced to local print (Daily Athenaeum, DominionPost) and electronic (WWVU-FM, WNPB-TV) media. Photographers or photojournalistsget practical experience with the Daily Athenaeum or as stringers for wire services.Students of print journalism learn electronic editing and pagination. Publicrelations and advertising majors execute projects of importance to local and stateorganizations. Internships and fellowships are available on campus, throughout <strong>West</strong><strong>Virginia</strong>, and in many other locations.The School of Journalism is in renovated Martin Hall, WVU's oldest building(constructed in 1 870). More than $1 .8 million was spent on renovating, furnishing, andequipping the building in 1 976-77. Four laboratories are equipped with Macintoshsystems for teaching beginning reporting through desktop publishing. Other labs housemodern radio and television equipment, light tables, photoenlargers, cameras, andequipment for independent study. In addition, the reading room stocks current newspapers,magazines, professional journals, and reference works.Typing ProficiencyTyping proficiency is required before enrollment in journalism classes. You will beexpected to submit all assignments in neat, type-written or word- processed form. Youmust develop word -processing proficiency in Journalism 15.Admission to Pre-JournalismThe School of Journalism uses the same admission standards as the <strong>University</strong>for pre-journalism students.Proficiency in EnglishWe emphasize competence in writing. If you plan to major in journalism, you mustachieve at least grades of C in English 1 and 2 and in Journalism 1. In addition, youmust pass a journalism qualifying examination before being admitted to the School ofJournalism or to Journalism 15. You may not enroll in additional journalism coursesuntil after Journalism 1 and Journalism 15 are completed with grades of C or better.ScholarshipsApproximately 20 majors in the School of Journalism are awarded financial scholarships,ranging from $400 to $1 ,1 00, each semester. Applicction must be made to theschool's scholarship committee during announced selection periods. Scholarshipawards are generally based on academic performance, potential for success in mediacareers and financial need.AdmissionTo be admitted as a School of Journalism major, you must meet these requirements:1. Achievement of at least a C grades in English 1 and 2. (See "Proficiency inEnglish" above.)2. Demonstration of necessary skills by passing the School's journalism ualifyingexamination or its equivalent.3. Completion of Journalism 1 and 15 with at least C grades.4. Completion of Library Science 1 with at least a C grade.5. Successful completion of 45 or more hours (excluding Fs) with an overallgrade-point average of at least 2.0, or a 2.5 overall grade-point average after 60or more hours.250 School of Journalism
