.Academic Common Market<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> provides its residents opportunity, through the Academic CommonMarket (ACM) and through contract programs, to pursue academic programs notavailable within the state. Both programs permit <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>ns to enter out-of-stateinstitutions at reduced tuition rates. Contract programs have been established for studyin optometry, podiatry, and veterinary medicine. The ACM provides access to numerousgraduate and undergraduate programs. The programs are restricted to <strong>West</strong><strong>Virginia</strong> residents who have been accepted for admission to one of the specificprograms at designated out-of-state institutions. Through reciprocal agreement, WVUallows residents of states within the ACM to enroll in graduate and undergraduateprograms on an in-state tuition basis. Application must be madethrough the higher education authority of the state of residence. <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> residentsshould apply through the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> Board of Trustees, 950 KanawhaBoulevard East, Charleston, WV 25301Baccalaureate DegreesStudent ResponsibilityAs a student, you are responsible for your academic well-being. Specifically, youare responsible for knowing your scholastic standing as it relates to the publishedregulations and standards of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong>. This responsibility includes theregulations of your college or school and the regulations of the department or divisionin which you are earning a degree. In order to graduate, you must go to your academicdean's office and complete an application for graduation and diploma. File yourapplication during the first month of the semester or summer session in which youexpect to graduate.Academic AdvisingWhen you enter <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>University</strong>, you are assigned an academicadviser. Your adviser assists you as you prepare your schedule, assigns classes asrequired by your degree program, and certifies your study list to the Director ofAdmissions and Records. Your adviser is also expected to give you advice andsympathetic guidance. You are expected to meet with your adviser to discuss youracademic problems.If you are a student in Arts and Sciences, Human Resources and Education, orSocial Work, you are admitted to a pre-program in a particular major. You remain in apre-program and are advised by a special academic adviser until you fulfill all requirementsfor admission to the degree program.You may choose to enter other pre-programs. Normally, these programs requireyou to complete 30-58 credits before you are admitted to a degree program. If youselect one of these pre-programs, you are advised through the <strong>University</strong> AdvisingCenter. The Center has professional advisers for the following areas: pre-business andeconomics, pre-journalism, pre-medical technology, pre-nursing, pre-pharmacy, andpre-physical therapy.Students who are undecided on a career field may enroll in general studies. If youchoose this option, you can explore several career and academic options before youmake a final choice. While you explore these different areas, you enroll in courses thatfulfill general <strong>University</strong> requirements for graduation and also provide a solid liberalarts foundation. You can be a general studies student for four semesters or until youare admitted to a degree program. If you select general studies, your adviser will belocated in the <strong>University</strong> Advising Center. The Center staff also advises part-time andspecial (non-degree) students.Regulations Affecting DegreesAll degrees are conferred by the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> Board ofAcademic Information 21
