Part 2 AdmissionWest Virginia University's first concern is to provide a quality education to allstudents. As such, the basic goal of the University's admission policy is to selectapplicants who will succeed academically and socially. If space is limited, the bestprepared students are admitted.As a land-grant university, West Virginia University has as its primary obligationthe people of its own state. Therefore, if you live in West Virginia, you are givenpreference for admission to the University or to the program of study that you havechosen. If you live elsewhere, a superior record from high school or from a previouscollege experience earns you similar consideration. To be considered for freshman admission,you must present the following high school credits:Required UnitsUnits (Years)4 English (including courses in grammar, composition, literature)3 Social studies (including U.S. history)2 Mathematics (Algebra 1 and higher; to qualify for the Math Placementexam, Algebra 2 is mandatory)2 Laboratory science (biology, chemistry, physics, or other courseswith a strong laboratory science orientation)It is strongly recommended that you complete two units of a foreign languageand three units of mathematics (including two units of algebra and one unit ofgeometry).Elective UnitsAreas such as computer science, fine arts, humanities, and typing arerecommended.Some colleges and programs have admission standards that exceed the minimalrequirements listed above. For example, pre-computer science in the College of Artsand Sciences and programs in the College of Engineering and the College of Mineraland Energy Resources require two units of algebra, one unit of geometry, and one-halfunit of trigonometry for a total of three and one-half units of mathematics.Freshman AdmissionsComplete your part of the admission form and return it to your high schoolcounseling office. Your counselor will complete the form and mail itwith the officialrecord of your high school studies to WVU. If you are still in high school, you shouldinclude the list of courses that you are currently taking. Grade Averages and Test ScoresThe grades that you earn in high school, your grade-point average at graduation,and the scores that you receive on comprehensive tests are the major factors used todetermine your admission to WVU. We do not decide to admit anyone until we seeACT (American College Testing) or SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores.As a high school graduate from West Virginia, you are eligible for admission if youhave a 2.0 grade-point average and either a composite enhanced ACT score of 1 9 ora total SAT score of 720. If you live in another state, you are eligible for admission ifyou have a 2.25 overall grade-point average and either an enhanced ACT compositescore of 20 or a total SAT score of 800. Normally, if you have the credit requirements,the grade-point average, and the test score, you are admitted without question if spaceis available. As space becomes limited, the better qualified applicants receive firstconsideration. If you have a lower average or a lower test score (but not lower forboth), the Admissions Review Committee reviews your application. You may beassured that each application is reviewed individually and given consideration.GEDIfyou earned a General Education Development (GED) diploma less than fiveyears before your admission request, you must present ACT or SAT scores with yourapplication, must complete course requirements, and must provide a copy of your highschool transcript. If you received a GED diploma more than five years ago, we do notrequire the ACT or SAT scores. In either case, you must send us whatever high schoolrecord you have completed.If it is more than five years since you graduated from high school or earned yourGED diploma, and you have not attended another college, we may, at our discretion,waive some of the admission requirements.Special ReviewsSome people are very talented in a specific field such as art or music; however,their high school records may be lacking academically. We are permitted to admit upto five percent of each freshman class because of this kind of special talent. If youhave aptitude or talent in art, music, writing, dramatics, or athletics, we may be able toadmit you in this special category, if you meet our other requirements. We also, on anindividual basis, give special consideration to the educationally disadvantaged.High School SpecialsIf you are now in high school, have completed your junior year, and have at leasta 3.0 grade-point average, you may register for up to six credit hours a semester atWVU. You must have the permission of your high school counselor and your parents.These courses allow you to get an early start on your college studies. This program isavailable to commuting students only.Early AdmissionA select number of high school seniors are academically and socially prepared toenter college before graduation from high school. WVU accepts a limited number ofthese high achieving, early maturing persons as full-time students in its Early AdmissionProgram.If you have completed your junior year in high school with at least a GPA of 3.5and a 26 enhanced ACT composite or 1 000 on the SAT, you may apply. Also, youmust have completed all requirements for graduation from high school except seniorEnglish. Special exceptions may be made by the University, with the approval of thehigh school, for students who have not completed other graduation requirements ifadmission is considered appropriate in the individual case.You will be asked to submit an admission application with all of the academicrecords required for freshmen as listed above.
