Jenks, CoordinatorNature of ProgramThe acceptance of liberal arts graduates in teaching positions, into graduate andprofessional schools, and in government, commerce, and industry is growing. Thisrecent upsurge in the popularity of the liberal arts graduate is based upon the recognitionthat the liberal arts degree prepares students to master new knowledge quicklyand to integrate new data with old.In order to foster skills in learning, in critical thinking, and in synthesizing, theliberal arts major requires students to gain a solid base in three areas: (a) the naturalsciences and mathematics; (b) the social sciences, and (c) the arts and humanities.Majors are encouraged to pursue their learning in at least one subject to a sophisticatedlevel. In this special area of concentration, students often approximate thecourse requirements of a second major. Majors must also complete all University andCollege of Arts and Sciences requirements.Admission RequirementsStudents may apply for admission to the liberal arts major after they complete 58hours of course work satisfactorily. However, because the major is rigorous, onlystudents with an above-average grade-point average are encouraged to apply.Students are admitted only after an interview with the coordinator and an evaluation oftheir academic progress. There is also a "pre-major" advising program supervised bythe coordinator, for which freshmen and sophomores are eligible.Degree RequirementsThe liberal arts major requires 30 semester hours in each of the threebasic areas of the liberal arts, plus 15 required semester hours in upper-divisionelectives. Courses in the three basic areas must be distributed among subjects andbetween lower and upper division courses as follows:Liberal Arts Major 123
