English Language and LiteratureDegree: Bachelor of ArtsRudolph P. Almasy, ChairpersonElizabeth Madison, Assistant ChairpersonMargaret Racin, Department AdviserNature of ProgramThe department offers courses for students who intend to pursue a graduatedegree in English; attain secondary certification to teach English or language arts;concentrate in literature and language as preparation for entrance into professionalschools; or concentrate in writing.Because English majors have varying interests in literature, language, and writing,they are strongly urged to consult the department's undergraduate adviser to plan theircourse work. To aid majors in their deliberations, the department has prepared astatement explaining special features of its curriculum, informing students of theopportunity to double major, and suggesting courses for students interested in literaryhistory, genre studies, language studies, creative writing, scientificAechnical writing,Appalachian studies, women's studies, and graduate study in English.Admissions RequirementsStudents may apply for admission to the degree program when they havecompleted 58 hours with a 2.0 grade-point average and have a cumulative average ofat least 2.0 for courses in English. Majors must maintain at least a 2.0 cumulativeaverage for English courses at WVU in order to retain their status as an English major.Degree RequirementsAn English major requires a minimum of 33 hours in literature, language, andwriting, exclusive of English 1 and 2. A maximum of 42 hours in English, exclusive ofEnglish 1 and 2, may be included within the 128 hours required for graduation.Required courses include: English 21, 22, 24, and 25; one course from English111, 113, 210, 211; English 150 or 250; (students must earn a grade of Cor better inall required English courses plus English 1 and 2);at least 15 additional hours ofcourses offered by the Department of English in literature, language, or writing; at leastnine hours of the student's total course work must be at the 200 level.Minor in EnglishAny student admitted to a degree program within the College of Arts and Sciencesmay take a minor in English. Such a minor consists of any 15 hours beyond English 1and 2 with a minimum of nine hours at the upper-division level. Students are advisedto design their own English minor to complement the work in their major. Only coursesin which the student earns a grade of C or better can be applied to the English minor.PublicationsVictorian Poetry, a critical journal of Victorian literature, is edited by the departmentof English. The journal was established at WVU in 1963 and has becomeinternationally known, with subscribers in 27 countries.Calliope, a publication of WVU student writing, is sponsored by the Department ofEnglish and the English Honorary and Club.<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> Philological Papers, a publication which prints a selection of papersread at the Colloquium on Modern Literature and Film, is supported by the Departmentof English.The Pater Newsletter, devoted to scholarship in late 19th century British literature,is also supported by the English Department.1 08 College of Arts and Sciences
