Sefar and the aquaculture industry
Currently, some 80 million metric
tons of fish are available each year for
direct human consumption. FAO*
expects demand to increase to 110 to
120 million metric tons by 2010 as
world population grows. By FAO`s
estimate, such demand could be satisfied
only under the most optimistic
scenario, with aquaculture production
doubling and overfishing brought
under control so that ocean fish stocks
can recover. Since 1984, the output of
aquaculture has increased annually by
10 percent, whereas captured fish output
has only increased 1.6 percent
each year. Today, about one-fourth of
the fish eaten by humans comes from
aquaculture systems. Aquaculture, the
farming of fish, shellfish etc. represents
the fastest growing sector in world
food production.

Products
Smart solutions for plankton nets
Smart solutions – catch them all.
With appropriately designed Sefar
plankton nets, harvests of several tons
per day can be achieved. With our
wide range of sieving fabrics plankton
can be perfectly graded.
The result is the correct plankton size
for all development stages of fish
larvae and fry.
Sefar produces plankton nets for all
kind of applications, from very small
to very large net sizes. The fabrics are
also available as roll goods.
Plankton harvest and research require
efficient fabrics with long life cycles.
Plankton nets need mesh openings between
2000 and 20 micrometers. The
correct opening is selected according
to the desired plankton size and the
water quality. In order to fulfil
these requirements, Sefar produces a
large range of mesh openings and
different fabric constructions.
Net cages for fingerling production
Internally illuminated sealed net cages
are stocked with fish larvae and submerged
in natural lakes, large ponds
or bays.
The development of multiple plankton
nets (3 in 1 nets) enables plankton to
be graded into three different sizes
during the catch. It is therefore possible
to feed the whole range of fish from
larvae to fingerlings with plankton of
the correct size.
Zooplankton organisms are attracted
by the light source which is located in
the center of the cages and invade –
due to their photopositive behavior –
steadily through the meshes into the
cages and are consumed by the fish
larvae. The selection of the appropriate
cage mesh size depends on the fish
larval size as well as the plankton size.
Thanks to the use of highly permeable
Sefar precision fabrics in combination
with the multiple plankton nets, every
desired size of feed can be harvested.

Products
Screening fabrics for hatcheries
and ponds
Successful application for hatcheries
and ponds require narrow mesh
grading combined with a large product
range.
The in- and outlets of raceway channels
and ponds are secured by fine-meshed
sluice screens. This protection avoids
the invasion of carnivorous or nutrientcompeting
organisms and prevents the
escape of the animals being cultured.
The screening technique is an essential
prerequisite for a successful tidal pond
operation in marine aquaculture –
which contributes to the main part of
shrimp and bivalve production. Sefar
offers also material for these specific
heavy duty requirements and the
appropriate technique and equipment
to fix the fabric to the screen frames.
For hatchery screening fabrics for
descaling sieves, landing-nets and
dip-nets, sluice screens and feed
size separation are used.

Water purification
Sefar fabrics are applied in one or
several layers as «pre-filters» in order
to clean the inflowing water of fish
farms or hatcheries. The most simple
version of these filters are the so-called
«filter-stockings» which are directly
attached to the water inlet pipes of fish
tanks or ponds. Such filters can easily
be cleaned or changed once or several
times a day and at lowest cost. Larger
particles or harmful organisms can
thus be efficiently kept away from the

Aquaculture requires constant control
with screens and sieves throughout all
activities like:
– daily control of the young
individuals
– filtration and sorting of live feed
organisms
– screens for laboratory
– sieving of solid particles for chemical
water analysis
– counting and biometry on
organisms as testing screens for
precise measurements on sediments
– size class separation of live or dead
organism or sediments
In order to achieve an efficient purification
of fish farm effluents, Sefar offer
large sieve systems in balloon or tube
forms. Today there is an increase in
demand for fine mesh sieves to purify
effluent water. Disc filter, microstrainers
and vibrating screens are common
systems for these new demands.

Broad solution range
The Sefar fabric program includes
precision sieves of different material
strengths and offers a narrow mesh
grading between 5000 and 5 micrometers
and therefore can fulfil all
requirements of today’s aquaculture
and hydrological needs. Appropriate
sieve fabrics are offered per running
meter and as standard or customized
products, such as plankton nets, net
cages, landing-nets, dip-nets and
control sieves.
