78An <strong><strong>in</strong>vestigation</strong> <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>domestic</strong> <strong>laundry</strong> <strong>habits</strong> <strong>in</strong> Europe4.3.4 Laundry itemsThe <strong>laundry</strong> items used are listed <strong>in</strong> table 4-5. All items are naturally soiled bybe<strong>in</strong>g used or worn by members <strong>of</strong> a private household. Each <strong>laundry</strong> item isused by the same (member <strong>of</strong> a) household dur<strong>in</strong>g the experiment. In this waythe contam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>laundry</strong> items dur<strong>in</strong>g the experiment is as identical aspossible. To evaluate cross-contam<strong>in</strong>ation, sterile samples are used. The fabricis 100% cotton. In order to obta<strong>in</strong>a more homogenous sample, a paper shredder is used to cut the items <strong>in</strong>tosmall pieces (see also photo 4.1). The paper shredder is dis<strong>in</strong>fected with alcohol(70%) <strong>an</strong>d the small pieces are collected <strong>in</strong> a sterile bag. After mix<strong>in</strong>g, 30<strong>of</strong> these pieces are used as a sample for determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the amount <strong>of</strong> microorg<strong>an</strong>ismsbefore wash<strong>in</strong>g. Additionally, 30 pieces are put <strong>in</strong> a sterile wash<strong>in</strong>gbag (a bag used for wash<strong>in</strong>g tabs) <strong>an</strong>d used for the assessment <strong>of</strong> the hygienicquality after wash<strong>in</strong>g. The samples are kept for a maximum <strong>of</strong> three days <strong>in</strong>the refrigerator.Picture 4-1 Sampl<strong>in</strong>g
