Hygiene effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>laundry</strong> processes <strong>in</strong> Europe 77assessed. For the purpose<strong>of</strong> the test, only a few <strong>laundry</strong> items on which the selected micro-org<strong>an</strong>ismsare likely to be found were selected.The occurrence <strong>an</strong>d amount <strong>of</strong> micro-org<strong>an</strong>isms on the selected <strong>laundry</strong> itemswas determ<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> a pre-test for verification purposes.H<strong>an</strong>dkerchiefBecause 50% <strong>of</strong> the hum<strong>an</strong> population are carriers <strong>of</strong> Staphylococcus aureus<strong>in</strong> the nose, a h<strong>an</strong>dkerchief <strong>of</strong> a carrier was selected. The average amount <strong>of</strong>Staphylococcus aureus found on a used h<strong>an</strong>dkerchief was log 3.3 CFU/3 cm 2 .DiaperFaeces are full <strong>of</strong> bacteria; Enterobacteriaceae, Bacillus <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong> m<strong>an</strong>y casesStaphylococcus aureus are very likely to be found. A baby's diaper could be agood sample for f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g these micro-org<strong>an</strong>isms. All bacteria were confirmedon the diapers <strong>in</strong> the pre-test. The average diaper conta<strong>in</strong>s about log 5.9CFU/3 cm 2 Enterobacteriaceae, log 5.6 CFU/3 cm 2 Bacillus <strong>an</strong>d 4.0 CFU/3cm 2 Staphylococcus aureus.SocksM<strong>an</strong>y people have foot moulds. A pair <strong>of</strong> socks could be contam<strong>in</strong>ated withthis micro- org<strong>an</strong>ism. Socks are also worn <strong>in</strong> a damp environment as a shoe.These are the ideal conditions for grow<strong>in</strong>g yeasts <strong>an</strong>d fungi. Only one log unitCFU/3 cm 2 was found <strong>in</strong> the pre-test.DishclothPrevious studies ([1], [2]) show that a dishcloth is a very highly contam<strong>in</strong>atedpiece <strong>of</strong> <strong>laundry</strong>. It conta<strong>in</strong>s a mix <strong>of</strong> various bacteria found <strong>in</strong> almost everyhousehold. It c<strong>an</strong> conta<strong>in</strong> every micro-org<strong>an</strong>ism which is <strong>in</strong>vestigated <strong>in</strong> thisexperiment. This was confirmed dur<strong>in</strong>g the pre-test (see table 4-4).
