72An <strong><strong>in</strong>vestigation</strong> <strong>in</strong>to the <strong>domestic</strong> <strong>laundry</strong> <strong>habits</strong> <strong>in</strong> Europe<strong>of</strong> cotton together with the soiled items <strong>an</strong>d the sterile base load. In order toget a homogeneous sample dur<strong>in</strong>g the tests, a method for sampl<strong>in</strong>g is developed.In order to validate the test method, the results <strong>of</strong> the laboratory tests arecompared to the results <strong>in</strong> a normal household wash. In this test the actual hygienesituation <strong>of</strong> <strong>domestic</strong> <strong>laundry</strong> after wash<strong>in</strong>g is determ<strong>in</strong>ed. Sterile samplesare washed together with household <strong>laundry</strong> <strong>in</strong> a household wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e.A good correlation between the contam<strong>in</strong>ation figures <strong>of</strong> both washes(laboratory wash <strong>an</strong>d household wash) <strong>in</strong>dicates a method that reflects therealistic household situation.4.2.2 Test pl<strong>an</strong>Two wash<strong>in</strong>g programmes (15°C <strong>an</strong>d 30°C) were run <strong>in</strong> a laboratory wash<strong>in</strong>gmach<strong>in</strong>e (Electrolux Wascator FOM 71MP-Lab) accord<strong>in</strong>g to IEC 60456 [9]conditions us<strong>in</strong>g the most common detergents <strong>in</strong> the four Europe<strong>an</strong> countries<strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest. The only variables <strong>in</strong> this design are the type <strong>of</strong> detergent <strong>an</strong>d thedosage.
