With these results,we will show the differences between a common Greek <strong>laundry</strong> process <strong>an</strong>d acommon Sp<strong>an</strong>ish <strong>laundry</strong> process. The differences <strong>in</strong> wash temperature aregreat, but are the differences <strong>in</strong> wash perform<strong>an</strong>ce equally great? That is whatwe wish to measure: the wash perform<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> the most common <strong>laundry</strong>process <strong>in</strong> each country <strong>in</strong>volved.3.2 Test<strong>in</strong>g conditionsThe procedure used is based on the <strong>in</strong>ternational st<strong>an</strong>dard IEC 60456:1998“Clothes wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es for household use – Methods for measur<strong>in</strong>g theperform<strong>an</strong>ce”[9] with modifications from the work document IEC59D/207/CD [20], which is <strong>an</strong> improvement on the current st<strong>an</strong>dard. This testmethod is used <strong>in</strong>ternationally for the determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> the wash perform<strong>an</strong>ce<strong>of</strong> wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Europe for the determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> wash perform<strong>an</strong>ce<strong>of</strong> detergents for ecolabell<strong>in</strong>g purposes.The wash perform<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d r<strong>in</strong>se efficiency <strong>of</strong> each detergent is determ<strong>in</strong>edafter five wash cycles with a fixed water hardness <strong>of</strong> 14°dH. Each detergent istested us<strong>in</strong>g a 30 °C <strong>an</strong>d a 40 °C wash programme. Tests are run <strong>in</strong> parallel <strong>in</strong>five identical household wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es (AEG Eco-Lavamat 6350 – frontloader).Additionally, the two most common <strong>laundry</strong> processes <strong>in</strong> each <strong>of</strong> the fourEurope<strong>an</strong> countries are tested for wash perform<strong>an</strong>ce. In this particular testthree cycles are run. The fact that only three cycles are used for these testswill me<strong>an</strong> a higher confidence <strong>in</strong>terval, <strong>an</strong>d some <strong>of</strong> the differences that wef<strong>in</strong>d not signific<strong>an</strong>t might have been signific<strong>an</strong>t if five cycles were run. Thereason for only three cycles was several delays <strong>in</strong> the project pl<strong>an</strong>, <strong>an</strong>d eventuallythere was not enough time to do tests as pl<strong>an</strong>ned.
