30An investigation into the domestic laundry habits in EuropeThe responses also showed that bath towels are washed at almost exactly thesame temperatures as bed sheets (see figure 2-5). When it comes to the technicalaspects of doing laundry, bath towels are mainly washed by machine inall of the countries, and the pattern is almost exactly the same as for bedsheets. These two household textiles seem to be washed more or less the sameway in all countries.2.4.3 JeansEven though we often think of jeans as blue jeans, they come in all colours, sizes and fabrics. Jeans are popular and may be used for leisure activities, socialoccasions and for work. It is not clear exactly what type of jeans each personin the survey is referring to. It should also be mentioned that not everybodyhas jeans, and especially not all of the women. Since the person incharge of the laundry is usually female, this could explain why 31 % of theGreek respondents find this question not relevant, followed by 18 % in Spain,17 % in the Netherlands and 4 % in Norway. Jeans seem to be a more masculinegarment in Greece, but to be used more by both sexes in Norway.1008060402001317241135111231 2614312536 3821279 7 5 6Greece Netherlands Norway Spain5 times or more4 times3 timesTwiceOnceFigure 2-7. (N=3220)The respondents in Greece and the Netherlands wash their jeans more oftenthan the respondents in Spain and Norway. In Greece and the Netherlandsjeans are most commonly washed after having been used twice, while amongthe Spanish respondents jeans are most commonly washed after 3 times use.Norwegians use them several times more; the most common response is thatjeans are washed after being used 5 times or more.

Assessment of the consumer laundry habits - a quantitative survey 31Even though almost all the respondents wash their jeans in a washing machine, the temperature used differs considerably. Again the Spanish respondentsseem to be most inclined to use cold water. 47 % say they wash theirjeans in cold water. The Greek respondents, on the other hand, are most inclinedto use the warmest temperature (32 % wash their jeans at 60 °C).1008060402007259524741322411 13 158451 3 2 1 1Greece Netherlands Norway SpainCold water30 degrees40 degrees60 degrees70 degrees90 degreesFigure 2-8.
