Almost everyone <strong>in</strong> the Sp<strong>an</strong>ish sample fully agreed that body odour isembarrass<strong>in</strong>g, while only about half <strong>of</strong> the people <strong>in</strong> the Netherl<strong>an</strong>ds <strong>an</strong>dNorway fully agreed that clothes should smell as if newly washed.2.3.2 Attitudes on cle<strong>an</strong>ness <strong>an</strong>d hygieneClothes should look cle<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d not smell, but what about cle<strong>an</strong>ness <strong>an</strong>d hygiene?Earlier we mentioned that people have m<strong>an</strong>y reasons for do<strong>in</strong>g their<strong>laundry</strong> the way they do. Launder<strong>in</strong>g is a process performed to get textilescle<strong>an</strong>. Clothes with dirt <strong>an</strong>d sta<strong>in</strong>s or residuals <strong>of</strong> detergent m<strong>an</strong>y constituteboth aesthetic <strong>an</strong>d health problems. But what is considered dirt <strong>an</strong>d what isnot differs from one culture to <strong>an</strong>other. Launder<strong>in</strong>g has also a hygienic aspect.Dirt c<strong>an</strong> spread <strong>in</strong>fectious disease, <strong>an</strong>d soap residue <strong>in</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>an</strong> cause allergicreactions. We w<strong>an</strong>ted to <strong>in</strong>vestigate whether people are concernedabout hygiene when launder<strong>in</strong>g. Two statements should give some <strong>in</strong>dication<strong>of</strong> this:- Clothes hygiene is import<strong>an</strong>t to me- Today’s detergents are so good that clothes get cle<strong>an</strong> even whenwashed at low temperatures
