Assessment <strong>of</strong> the consumer <strong>laundry</strong> <strong>habits</strong> - a qu<strong>an</strong>titative survey 21If you are liv<strong>in</strong>g by yourself it is most likely that you have to do your own<strong>laundry</strong>. S<strong>in</strong>ce our sample consists <strong>of</strong> the person <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>laundry</strong>, weshould expect to f<strong>in</strong>d more men <strong>in</strong> the “s<strong>in</strong>gle” categories. Our <strong>an</strong>alysis confirmsthat there is a larger share <strong>of</strong> men <strong>in</strong> the “s<strong>in</strong>gle” categories (s<strong>in</strong>gle orpreviously married) th<strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong> the categories <strong>of</strong> married <strong>an</strong>d cohabit<strong>in</strong>g.Laundry is gendered work; that is, if you are married or cohabit<strong>an</strong>t it is mostlikely that the wom<strong>an</strong> is <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>laundry</strong>. This pattern is most dist<strong>in</strong>ctive<strong>in</strong> Greece, where only 1 % <strong>of</strong> the married persons <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>laundry</strong>were male. At the opposite end <strong>of</strong> the scale we f<strong>in</strong>d the Norwegi<strong>an</strong> respondents, where 12 % <strong>of</strong> the married persons <strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>laundry</strong> were male. How much time you spend <strong>an</strong>d how you do your <strong>laundry</strong> might have someth<strong>in</strong>gto do with the amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>laundry</strong> to be done, which <strong>in</strong> turn is related tohow m<strong>an</strong>y persons there are <strong>in</strong> the household. Greek households tend to havethe greatest number <strong>of</strong> people <strong>in</strong> them; 30 % consist <strong>of</strong> 4 persons, <strong>an</strong>d 16 % <strong>of</strong>Greek households consist <strong>of</strong> 5 persons or more. On the opposite end we f<strong>in</strong>dthat the Norwegi<strong>an</strong> households are most likely to consist <strong>of</strong> only 1 or 2 persons.2.2 Use <strong>of</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>esMach<strong>in</strong>es are me<strong>an</strong>t to make work easier. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the tumble dryer c<strong>an</strong> be a goodsolution if you have a lot <strong>of</strong> <strong>laundry</strong>, but less space to dry it. However, thetumble dryer is not as common as the wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>an</strong>d there are subst<strong>an</strong>tialdifferences between the countries. In the Netherl<strong>an</strong>ds the tumble dryerseems to be quite common; 71% <strong>of</strong> the households have one. In Norway alittle less th<strong>an</strong> half <strong>of</strong> the households have one (47%). In Greece it is very rareto f<strong>in</strong>d a household with a private tumble dryer (only 5%). In Spa<strong>in</strong> own<strong>in</strong>g aprivate tumble dryer is not as rare; every 4 th household owns one.We found that the share <strong>of</strong> households hav<strong>in</strong>g a tumble dryer <strong>in</strong>creases withthe number <strong>of</strong> persons <strong>in</strong> the household.
