Environmental protection, consumer <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>an</strong>d safety 1095.3 Guidel<strong>in</strong>es for st<strong>an</strong>dardisation bodiesAn import<strong>an</strong>t function dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>laundry</strong> process is the r<strong>in</strong>se perform<strong>an</strong>ce.S<strong>in</strong>ce this is related to both the allergenic effects <strong>an</strong>d the hygienic quality, <strong>an</strong><strong>in</strong>itiative is needed to <strong>in</strong>vestigate this issue <strong>in</strong> the st<strong>an</strong>dardisation bodies.M<strong>an</strong>y methods have been used to determ<strong>in</strong>e r<strong>in</strong>se perform<strong>an</strong>ce (or r<strong>in</strong>se efficiencyas it is also called), but unfortunately none have been proved reproducible. Thus there are no available data def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong> acceptable level for r<strong>in</strong>seperform<strong>an</strong>ce, but when tap water is used as a reference we might have aguidel<strong>in</strong>e. <strong>SIFO</strong> (the National Institute for Consumer Research) is represented<strong>in</strong> the work<strong>in</strong>g group appo<strong>in</strong>ted by the Nordic Council <strong>of</strong> M<strong>in</strong>isters to f<strong>in</strong>d areproducible method for the determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> r<strong>in</strong>se efficiency, but this workhas not yet been completed. For the time be<strong>in</strong>g the method described <strong>in</strong> the<strong>in</strong>ternational st<strong>an</strong>dard IEC 60456 will be used. This is especially import<strong>an</strong>t forthe committees deal<strong>in</strong>g with wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es: IEC TC 59 D <strong>an</strong>d Cenelec59D <strong>an</strong>d their subcommittees <strong>an</strong>d ma<strong>in</strong>ten<strong>an</strong>ce teams. The relationship between st<strong>an</strong>dardisation <strong>of</strong> household wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es,household textile detergents <strong>an</strong>d labell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> textiles deserves scrut<strong>in</strong>y <strong>in</strong> light<strong>of</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> this project. It is obvious that there are connections here thatshould be given more attention when writ<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>an</strong>dards. The pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>to account the possibility for a consumer to make mistakes is import<strong>an</strong>t<strong>in</strong> other parts <strong>of</strong> st<strong>an</strong>dardisation (“foreseeable misuse”). This pr<strong>in</strong>ciple shouldalso be vitalised <strong>in</strong> the issues <strong>of</strong> wash<strong>in</strong>g textiles. The dosage <strong>of</strong> detergentsrelated to the hardness <strong>of</strong> water is <strong>an</strong>other factor that should be given moreattention. The relationship between the dosage given (per kilogram textiles)<strong>an</strong>d how easy is it to determ<strong>in</strong>e this when start<strong>in</strong>g a household wash<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>eis also <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g.The st<strong>an</strong>dardisation <strong>of</strong> environmental impacts is a complex issue. However, this should not prevent the use <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ued efforts to f<strong>in</strong>d best possible practices,<strong>in</strong> order to make consumers aware <strong>of</strong> the implications <strong>of</strong> their behaviours.Energy labels must cont<strong>in</strong>ue to conta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation on wash<strong>in</strong>g results as part<strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>formation to the consumer. For the Nordic Sw<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d the EU-flower,it is essential that the criteria documents cont<strong>in</strong>ue to be revised <strong>in</strong> order to take<strong>in</strong>to account new developments.Labell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> textiles <strong>in</strong> a global perspective is needed because garments todayare produced worldwide. Focus must therefore be kept on the issue <strong>of</strong> carelabell<strong>in</strong>g. ISO/TC 38 is one committee deal<strong>in</strong>g with this issue, <strong>an</strong>d efforts
