5 Environmental protection, consumer<strong>in</strong>terests <strong>an</strong>d safety <strong>an</strong>d guidel<strong>in</strong>es forst<strong>an</strong>dardisation bodies5.1 Environmental protectionIn the <strong>domestic</strong> textile wash<strong>in</strong>g processes there are several factors that couldbe looked upon as determ<strong>in</strong><strong>an</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> impact on the environment. These factorsc<strong>an</strong> be divided <strong>in</strong>to three groups:1. Water (amount <strong>of</strong> water used)2. Temperature (energy use)3. Detergents (pollution).Because <strong>of</strong> these environmental effects, efforts to achieve a susta<strong>in</strong>able lifestylehave <strong>in</strong>fluenced household launder<strong>in</strong>g signific<strong>an</strong>tly dur<strong>in</strong>g the past threedecades. Hereafter it will be shown that the measures that have been <strong>in</strong>troducedto protect the environment not only affect the environmental impact <strong>of</strong>launder<strong>in</strong>g but are also likely to <strong>in</strong>fluence levels <strong>of</strong> hygiene <strong>in</strong> the households<strong>an</strong>d thus the public health situation.5.1.1 WaterHousehold water consumption has <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> recent decades. In the Netherl<strong>an</strong>ds,for <strong>in</strong>st<strong>an</strong>ce, about 25 % <strong>of</strong> household water consumption is for textilecle<strong>an</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d dishwash<strong>in</strong>g [23]. On the output side <strong>of</strong> the household system,the dra<strong>in</strong>ed wastewater burdens water clear<strong>in</strong>g pl<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>an</strong>d/or the surface waters.Modern-day <strong>domestic</strong> appli<strong>an</strong>ces use less water th<strong>an</strong> those <strong>of</strong> a few decadesago. However, this must be seen <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>an</strong> import<strong>an</strong>t function <strong>in</strong>the <strong>laundry</strong> process, namely r<strong>in</strong>se perform<strong>an</strong>ce.
