Celebrating Malaysia’s Orang-<strong>utan</strong>s at <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Negara</strong>Whilst <strong>orang</strong>-<strong>utan</strong> fans around the globe gather at zoos and wildlife parksto celebrate International Orang-<strong>utan</strong> Awareness Week, Malaysians areinvited to take part in special events at <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Negara</strong>, Kuala Lumpur, andcelebrate one of the country’s most well loved national icons.Orang-<strong>utan</strong> Awareness Week (OAW) is a worldwide event that bringspeople together to have fun and learn about <strong>orang</strong>-<strong>utan</strong>s, rainforests andthe reasons why we need both for a happy, healthy planet.This <strong>year</strong> <strong>Zoo</strong> <strong>Negara</strong> joins an all star line up of zoos including Honolulu,Miami, Denver and Atlanta, each playing host in their respective countries,to a series of events throughout the month of November, all of which aimto inform, education, and best of all excite people from all walks of life byinviting them in the world of the <strong>orang</strong>-<strong>utan</strong>.Awareness week will kick off on November 7 th with the unveiling of a lifesized <strong>orang</strong>-<strong>utan</strong> nest which children can climb into, along with launch ofour two week long exhibition of all things <strong>orang</strong>-<strong>utan</strong>! The nest and mural isbuilt and designed by the students of the Design School at Taylor’sUniversity.Families are invited to start the school holidays in style on November 20 <strong>than</strong>d 21 st by taking part in a zoo wide treasure hunt on wildlife, <strong>orang</strong>-<strong>utan</strong>sand the environment. Children can learn how to make toys for the <strong>orang</strong><strong>utan</strong>s(known as “enrichment” in zoo speak!), take part in colouring and artactivities, and play lots of <strong>orang</strong>-<strong>utan</strong> themed games. This healthy little one is a fast learnerwhere climbing is concerned. She’s not just climbing but alsoquite a daredevil in swinging around her den being her playfuland inquisitive self.She needs a name befitting her character. Would <strong>you</strong> beable to suggest the winning name?Drop <strong>you</strong>r suggestion at the Ape Centre by 21 st November2010.Other activities:Orang-<strong>utan</strong> souvenirs: Going all Ape?
