Celebrating Malaysia’s Orang-utans at Zoo NegaraWhilst orang-utan fans around the globe gather at zoos and wildlife parksto celebrate International Orang-utan Awareness Week, Malaysians areinvited to take part in special events at Zoo Negara, Kuala Lumpur, andcelebrate one of the country’s most well loved national icons.Orang-utan Awareness Week (OAW) is a worldwide event that bringspeople together to have fun and learn about orang-utans, rainforests andthe reasons why we need both for a happy, healthy planet.This year Zoo Negara joins an all star line up of zoos including Honolulu,Miami, Denver and Atlanta, each playing host in their respective countries,to a series of events throughout the month of November, all of which aimto inform, education, and best of all excite people from all walks of life byinviting them in the world of the orang-utan.Awareness week will kick off on November 7 th with the unveiling of a lifesized orang-utan nest which children can climb into, along with launch ofour two week long exhibition of all things orang-utan! The nest and mural isbuilt and designed by the students of the Design School at Taylor’sUniversity.Families are invited to start the school holidays in style on November 20 thand 21 st by taking part in a zoo wide treasure hunt on wildlife, orang-utansand the environment. Children can learn how to make toys for the orangutans(known as “enrichment” in zoo speak!), take part in colouring and artactivities, and play lots of orang-utan themed games. Do you know how tomanoeuvre your food out of a food maze?Face these challenges through specially created games andsee what Zoo Negara’s resident apes and their wild relativeswould have to do to get their daily intake of food!Game stalls are at the Ape Centre and will be open from 9amto 4pm.Toys for Apes: Help volunteers to make toys for orang-utansand their other ape friends.
