• The LED (light emitting diode) beacon, and its main function is the timecalibration of the detector.• The Hydrophones: Their main function is the acoustic positioning of thedetector. The roles of the LED beacon and the hydrophones will be explained more thoroughlyin section 3.2.1.2.LinesThere are 12+1 lines in ANTARES. Twelve lines that house the actual detector, and each line consists as previously mentioned of 25 stories. The extra line isan instrumentation line (IL07) (Figure 3.14) which holds an acoustic detectionsystem and other oceanographic instruments. IL07 is made up of only six stories. The acoustics detection system (AMADEUS[90]) on the instrumentation linehas the role of detecting neutrinos through an acoustic signal. The standard OMsare replaced with special acoustic sensors. There is three of these floors on theIL07 and an additional three on the line 12 of the ANTARES detector. Each floorholds six acoustic sensors all distanced from each other by 1 m.The other instruments on the IL07 are meant to do studies of the propriety ofthe environment around ANTARES, such as the Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers(ADCP) which measures the direction and speed of sea current. There isas well a sound velocimeter to measure the local velocity of sound, in additionto sensors that measure the conductivity and temperature of sea water. There isas well other instruments to measure the light attenuation of the water, amountof oxygen in the water and cameras to monitor the bio-luminescent organismsaround the detector.Junction boxThe role of the junction is two fold. The first one is link all the lines togetherelectronically and to be a relay between the onshore control center and the detectorvia the optical network. The second is to provide power to the whole detector asit houses the power transformers.Electro-Optical cableThe electro-optical cable is a two-in-one cable that connects the onshore controlstation and the detector. It provides the electrical power for the detector and thedata transmission capabilities.46
