In response tothe Crimean War, the <strong>Garrison</strong> starteddevelopment to become a permanentartillery range Station for the Royal Artilleryin 1854. <strong>The</strong> War highlighted the need for aSchool of Gunnery to standardise trainingof new weaponry such as rifled guns and sothe site was developed further in 1859.In the years to come, the <strong>Garrison</strong> provideda central role in artillery development andimpacted <strong>Shoeburyness</strong> greatly, shifting itfrom a rural community to a <strong>Garrison</strong> town.Throughout the World Wars, the <strong>Garrison</strong>saw intense activity and new defenceswere built as part of Rearmament in 1936,but inter-war decline also saw the finalseparation of experimentation and testingfrom the <strong>Garrison</strong> and the size was reducedsomewhat.
