2 AMERICAN PRESS FOOTBALL 2010THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2010FOOTBALLTeam needed to pick up torchJohnathanManningHigh SchoolsPrior to Westlake’s run to theSuperdome three years ago, folksin Westlake had an inkling that theRams were going to be good. There was talk that coming upwas a group of good middle-schoolkids who would be the next greatWestlake team. What followedwere two undefeated regular seasons,a trip to the Class 3A statefinals and a quarterfinal appearance. The same went for Barbe’s runthe past couple of years. A fewyears ago the Bucs communitywas abuzz about the group of athletescoming into the Barbe program... and sure enough, theyoung Bucs delivered. Barbe went12-1 and reached the semifinals in2008 and went 9-3 last year, reachingthe regionals. There’s not the same amount ofbuzz about any one team this year. But a lack of talk doesn’t necessarilyindicate a lack of talent. When Sulphur went to the 5Afinals in 2006, the Tors weren’t precededby a tremendous amount ofexpectation (that’s not to say it wascompletely unexpected; the Torshad been to the quarterfinals theyear before).Sulphur had a lot of talent atdifferent positions and had someathletes who made a huge jumpwhile in high school.Really, the Sulphur ’06 scenarioprobably best fits this year. Thereare several teams in the area thatare good, they just need to turn thecorner.Take, for instance, Jennings. The Bulldogs were a great runningteam last year. Michael Wilridgeran for 1,197 and DavondrickPhillps ran for 1,308. This year, itlooks like that running game isgoing to be even better behind anice-sized offensive line. And, Jennings went to theregionals last year. It just needs tobe seen how the Bulldogs’ defensivefront develops.LaGrange is in a similar situation. The Gators have a pair ofgreat all-around athletes in DariusEdwards and Aaron Sam, but needthings to fall into place on bothsides of the ball. Then there are teams likeOberlin, which went to the quarterfinalslast year but graduated alot. Sure, the Tigers have a greatrunning back in Cedric Skinner, but can he carry the team, or willsomeone step up and fill the holesleft by Jacob Ware and runningback Chadd Strother? Those wereguys that contributed on both sidesof the ball. Then there’s Rosepine. LikeJennings, the Eagles return allthree members of their backfieldSee MANNING, Page 3TABLE OF CONTENTSDistrict 3-5ABarbe . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5LaGrange . . . . . . . . . 12Sulphur . . . . . . . . . . . 9Rest of 3-5A. . . . . . . . 7District 4-4ALeesville. . . . . . . . . . 19District 5-4ADeRidder . . . . . . . . . 24Jennings. . . . . . . . . . 27St. Louis. . . . . . . . . . 21Sam Houston . . . . . . 15Wash.-Marion. . . . . . 22District 4-3AIowa. . . . . . . . . . . . . 33Westlake . . . . . . . . . 29Rest of 4-3A. . . . . . . 34District 4-2ADeQuincy. . . . . . . . . 37E. Thisyear the massive tackle willlook to lead the Warriors to areturn to their winning ways.MANNING: Area in search of a team to pick up the torchfrom PAGE 2in quarterback Klint White, running back Gary Suydamand fullback Kameron Suire(White and Suire are alsomajor contributors ondefense).Or maybe it will be St.Louis. The Saints have beenquietly putting together a nicerésumé the past few years. They’ve won a playoff gamethe past three years, duringwhich time they’ve also gone23-13. They’re due a long playoffrun.Or maybe it will be someonewho hasn’t been on themap in a while. Elton onlywent 2-8 last year, but returnsLandon Carmon, who ledSouthwest in rushing with1,500-plus yards.Oh, and others are takingnotice of them. The Indiansfinished second in theDistrict 4-1A preseasoncoaches’ poll and got threefirst-place votes.Whoever it will be carries abig burden — in case youhaven’t heard, SouthwestLouisiana is in a title drought. The area hasn’t had a championshipsince Iota in 1999 and,to be honest, trips to theSuperdome haven’t been allthat often. But when you’re the lastteam in the area left standingin the playoffs, that’s a burdenworth bearing.■Johnathan Manning covers highschool athletics. Only twoon defense.“On paper we shouldn’t bevery good,” Shaver said. But Shaver coachesteenagers, not paper dolls.“I know they get better asthey play,” he said. “I’ve seenit too many times.”Shaver’s eyes, after allthese years, look on thebright side.“In (Class) 5A football, youought to play with seniorsevery year. They play, theypractice, they wait their turn, they step up when it is theirturn and make plays and wingames.”That’s the plan anyway. And the numbers are a littledeceiving in that many ofthe new “starters” aren’t newto the field. We don’t reallyhave true running backs. We throw it mostly.”Again, the Bucs are playingto their personnel.“Foster is the real deal,”Shaver said. “He’s as good aquarterback as we’ve had, which is saying something. He can flat throw the footballand he’s much better now, Ithink, at reading things andgetting it to the open targetmore than just throwing itdown there.“We’ve got to beBRAD PUCKETT / AMERICAN PRESSsmart enough to get peopleopen and get people in positionto make plays and runafter the catch.”The Bucs plan to mix andmatch, using a host of goodreceivers,“Before it’s all said anddone, they’re all going to beable to catch the ball,” Shaversaid. “You’ve got to figure outwhat each one of them can dobest.”Except one.“Tye Taylor can do it all,”Shaver said of his onlySee BUCS, Page 7

THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2010FOOTBALL 2010AMERICAN PRESS9SULPHURSulphur expects easy transitionBY WARREN ARCENEAUXAMERICAN PRESSA new head coach is callingthe shots but the upheavalof a coaching change waslimited by the retention ofmost of the staff as Sulphurdefensive coordinator HaroldFusilier was promoted tohead coach of the GoldenTors.“One of the reasons I tookthe job wasDistrict because of the3-5A staff, and theschool guaranteedcontinuity,” said Fusilier.“Practices have been good sofar.”Sulphur will also have anew look on the field, withjust seven starters returning. The three returnees onoffense all play along the line— guards Tyler Truett andJack Bergstedt and tight endTyler Lominac. Bergstedt willmiss the first month of theseason with an injury, as willtackle Dillon LaFleur. GarrettLandry, a converted defensiveend, will line up as a secondtight end.“His hands are as good asanyone on the team,” saidFusilier. “He and Lominacboth catch the ball well. BrettBurch was injured most oflast year but will help at center. We are working JohnHead at guard and DanielTeal at tackle. Curtis Killianhas done well so far. We wantto know how the young guysdo against different-coloredshirts, but they have donewell so far. Our concern isthat the depth was not greatand we have lost a couple kidsalready.”The skill position playerswill be new starters, withBrice Gardiner taking thesnaps and Chase Hebert andKeith Jasmine running theball. Hunter Bourgeois willlead the receiving corps followingthe graduation of WillHassien and Chip Armelin.“We think Gardiner isgoing to do well, he has a goodarm, quite a bit of poise, butHarold Fusilier will rely on, from left, Dentzel Brown, Cody Mills, Chase Hebert and Will Hansen in his first year asSulphur High’s head football coach.is just inexperienced,” saidFusilier.“Chase played quarterbackon the JV but was moved torunning back and receiver. Ilike his versatility. He knowsthe offense, can run well, catches well and can throw. He will probably be on thefield every play, at differentpositions. Jasmine will be thetailback, he is not a scat backor a power back, but combinesboth. He is strong, runshard and does a good job. Wethink Bourgeois is as good areceiver as anybody has. Wehave a group behind him thatwill play.“As a unit, it is not as big adropoff from last year as youwould think.”Defensively, the Tors willbe strong up the middle withCody Mills and HoldenRogers returning. LoganLeJeune moves from tightend to defensive end and isslated to start opposite JimLeBlanc. Sophomore AshtonJoseph will start at tackle.“LeJeune played a coupleof games on defense last year, and has gotten a lot betterwith more reps,” saidFusilier. “We are lucky at endwhere we have four seniors. All will play in a rotation.Michael Bass will share timewith LeJeune, while on theother end LeBlanc andGunnar Busch will split time.It is a good competition withthose guys. We don’t have thesame depth at tackle. Millsplayed all year and is backedup by Hunter Burleson, a juniorthat has improved tremendously.Ashton is a sophomorenose tackle that had agood spring and is doing thesame in the fall. He runs welland has good strength. We aretrying to develop his stamina. We will rotate those three,Burleson can play bothspots.”Joining Rogers at linebackerwill be returnee JonPeterson and newcomerTaylor Sedano.“We have moved Rogersfrom strong side to the middle,”Fusilier said. “I am notsure he liked it at firstbecause there is a lot more todo, such as calling the defenseand being the leader, but he isdoing a lot better. It is startingto fall into place and I thinkhe is starting to like it better. He is very physical and aBRAD PUCKETT / AMERICAN PRESSgreat runner. We want him inthe middle so he can help onboth sides, we did not wantpeople to be able to run awayfrom him.“Jon is having a good fall.He recognizes things quicker. We like him on the weak sidesince he is a hybridsafety/linebacker. Overall, I feelgood about the experience wehave on defense.”On offense, the runninggame is in good hands withthe return of linemen CadeCourville and TylerChurchman, tight endStephen Box and two provenrunners in Dillon Berlin andLucas Leger, who came on atthe end of the season.“We have good depth atrunning back, Berlin is agood power runner, whileLeger has a little more speedand quickness,” Johns said.“They give us a one-twopunch and allow us to keepfresh legs.“We are still not big on theoffensive line, but they arecoming around. Courvillewas all-district last year andChurchman is a good center.Box did a good job last year,he is real scrappy.”The question marks lie inthe passing game. They’resmart kids (the sophomores),they only lost two games injunior high.”Kellogg is confidentenough that he believes boththe offense and the defensecan be better than those oflast year’s 7-4 team. Both the offense and thedefense will be led by thereturn of C.J.
