Chap. I. Atomkal Phil<strong>of</strong>ophy leads to Incorpore<strong>all</strong>fm.47XXXVIII. We have now fufficiently "performed our firfl tafk, whichwas to fhow from <strong>the</strong> origin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> atomical phyfiology, that <strong>the</strong> doctrine<strong>of</strong> incorporeal fubftance muft needs fpring up toge<strong>the</strong>r with it. Wefli<strong>all</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> next place, make it manifeft, that tiie inward conftitution <strong>of</strong>th<strong>is</strong> phil<strong>of</strong>ophy <strong>is</strong> alfo fuch, that wh<strong>of</strong>oever re<strong>all</strong>y entertains it, <strong>and</strong> rightlyunderft<strong>and</strong>s it, muft <strong>of</strong> necefTity admit incorporeal fubftance likewife,Firft <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> atomical hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong>, <strong>all</strong>owing nothing to body, butwhat <strong>is</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r included in <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> a thing impenetrably extended, orcan clearly be conceived to be a mode <strong>of</strong> it, as more or lefs magnitude, with divifibihty, figure, fite, motion <strong>and</strong> reft, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> refults <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>ir feveral combinations, cannot polTibly make life <strong>and</strong> cogitation tobe qualities <strong>of</strong> body -, fince <strong>the</strong>y are nei<strong>the</strong>r contained in th<strong>of</strong>e things beforementioned, nor can refult from any (tj^uJ/ij;!, or conjugations <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>m. Wherefore it muft needs be granted, that life <strong>and</strong> cogitationare <strong>the</strong> attributes <strong>of</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r fubftance diftinft from body, or incorporeal.Again, fince according to <strong>the</strong> tenour <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> phyfiology, body hath noo<strong>the</strong>r aftion belonging to it but that <strong>of</strong> local motion, which local motion,as fuch, <strong>is</strong> eflenti<strong>all</strong>y heterokinefy, that which never fprings origin<strong>all</strong>y from<strong>the</strong> thing it felf moving, but always from <strong>the</strong> aftion <strong>of</strong> fome o<strong>the</strong>r agentupon it ; that <strong>is</strong>, fince no body could ever move it felf, it follows undeniably, that <strong>the</strong>re muft be fomething elfe in <strong>the</strong> world befides body,or elfe <strong>the</strong>re could never have been any motion in it. Of which we Ih<strong>all</strong>fpeak more afterwards. Moreover, according to th<strong>is</strong> phil<strong>of</strong>ophy, <strong>the</strong> corporeal phasnomena <strong>the</strong>mfelvescannot be folved by mechanifm alone without fancy. Now fancy<strong>is</strong> no mode <strong>of</strong> body, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore muft- needs be a mode <strong>of</strong> fome o<strong>the</strong>rkind <strong>of</strong> being in ourfelves, that <strong>is</strong> cogitative <strong>and</strong> incorporeal.Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, it <strong>is</strong> evident from <strong>the</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> phil<strong>of</strong>ophy, thatfenfe it felf <strong>is</strong> not a mere corporeal paffion from bodies without, in thatit fupp<strong>of</strong>eth, that <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> nothing re<strong>all</strong>y in bodies like to thole fantaftickideas that we have <strong>of</strong> fenfible things, as <strong>of</strong> hot <strong>and</strong> cold, red <strong>and</strong> green, bitter <strong>and</strong> fwcet, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> like, which <strong>the</strong>refore muft needs owe <strong>the</strong>irbeing to fome ad:ivity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foul it felf ; <strong>and</strong> th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>all</strong> one as to makeitincorporeal.Laftly, from th<strong>is</strong> phil<strong>of</strong>ophy, it <strong>is</strong> alio manifeft, that fenfe <strong>is</strong> not <strong>the</strong>xfilri^iou <strong>of</strong> truth concerning bodies <strong>the</strong>mfelves, it confidently pronouncing, that th<strong>of</strong>e fupp<strong>of</strong>ed qualities <strong>of</strong> bodies, reprefented fuch by fenfe, aremerely fantaftical things -, from whence it plainly follows, that <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong>fomething in us fuperior to fenfe, which judges <strong>of</strong> it, detects its fantaftry,<strong>and</strong> condemns its imp<strong>of</strong>ture, <strong>and</strong> determines what re<strong>all</strong>y <strong>is</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> not,in bodies without us, which muft needs be a higher felf-adive vigour <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> mind, that will plainly fpeak it to be incorporeal.3 XXXIX.
