Now, according to th<strong>is</strong> latter Platonick hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong>,<strong>the</strong>re would feem to be not fo much a gradation or defcenr, as a kind<strong>of</strong> circulation in <strong>the</strong> Trinity. Upon <strong>all</strong> which confiderations, <strong>the</strong> PlatonickChriftian will conclude, that though fome junior Plaronifts have adulterated<strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trinity, yet ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> no fuch great difference betwixt<strong>the</strong> genuine Platonick Trinity, rightly underftood, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chriftian ;or elfe, that as <strong>the</strong> fame might be modelled <strong>and</strong> reftified, <strong>the</strong>re need notto be.But though <strong>the</strong> genuine Platonifts do thus fupp<strong>of</strong>e <strong>the</strong> three hyp<strong>of</strong>tafes<strong>the</strong>ir Trinity to be <strong>all</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, not only God, but alfo one God, or ;u.ta!SfOT))?, one entire Divinity ; upon which latter account, <strong>the</strong> whole may befaid alfo by <strong>the</strong>m, to have one fingular or numerical efi'ence : yet notwithft<strong>and</strong>ingmuft it be acknowledged, that <strong>the</strong>y no where fupp<strong>of</strong>e each <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>fe three hyp<strong>of</strong>tafes to be numeric<strong>all</strong>y <strong>the</strong> very fame, or to have no diftindlfingular efiences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own ; th<strong>is</strong> bi-ing, in <strong>the</strong>ir apprehenfions, diretllycontradiftious to <strong>the</strong>ir very hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong> itielf, <strong>and</strong> <strong>all</strong> one, as if <strong>the</strong>yfhould affirm <strong>the</strong>m, indeed not to be three hyp<strong>of</strong>tafes, but only one. Never<strong>the</strong>lefs,<strong>the</strong> Chriftian Placonift would here alfo apologize for <strong>the</strong>m afterth<strong>is</strong> manner ; that <strong>the</strong> ancient orthodox fa<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chriftian church weregener<strong>all</strong>y <strong>of</strong> no o<strong>the</strong>r perfuafion than th<strong>is</strong>, that that effcnce or fubftance <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Godhead, which <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong> three perfons or hyp<strong>of</strong>tafes agree in, as each <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>m <strong>is</strong> God, was not one fingular <strong>and</strong> individual, but only one common<strong>and</strong> univerfil efifence or fubftance ; that word fubftance being ufed by <strong>the</strong>mas fynonymous with efience, <strong>and</strong> applied to univerfds likewife, as it <strong>is</strong> by <strong>the</strong>Peripateticks, when <strong>the</strong>y c<strong>all</strong> a man, or animal in general, fv.bfiantiam fecundam,a fecond fubftance. Now th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> evident from hence, bccaufe <strong>the</strong>feorthodox fa<strong>the</strong>rs did commorily diftinguifli, in th<strong>is</strong> controverfy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Trinity, betwixt Ol(rlx <strong>and</strong> 'T7ror^.o-ic, <strong>the</strong> ejence or fiitftance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Godhead, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>hyp<strong>of</strong>tafes or perfons <strong>the</strong>mfelves, after th<strong>is</strong> manner -, that <strong>the</strong> hyp<strong>of</strong>taf<strong>is</strong>or pcrfon was fingular <strong>and</strong> individual, but <strong>the</strong> eflence or fubftance common<strong>and</strong> univerfal.
