All which was doubtlefs a gr<strong>of</strong>s miftake <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient Cabala<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Trinity.Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore that Platonick Trinity, which we opp<strong>of</strong>e to <strong>the</strong> Chriftian,not as \f Plato's own trinity, in <strong>the</strong> very eflential conftitution <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>,were quite a different thing from <strong>the</strong> Chriftian ; it felf in <strong>all</strong> probability havingbeen at firft derived from a Divine or M<strong>of</strong>aick Cabala ; but becaufeth<strong>is</strong> Cabala, (as might well come to pafs in a thing fo myfterious <strong>and</strong> difficultto be conceived) hath been by divers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>fe Platonifts <strong>and</strong> Pythagoreansmifunderftood, depraved, <strong>and</strong> adulterated, into fuch a trinity, as confoundsdie differences between God <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> creature, <strong>and</strong> removes <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong> bounds<strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>-marks betwixt <strong>the</strong>m ; finks <strong>the</strong> Deity lower <strong>and</strong> lower by degrees,(ftill multiplying <strong>of</strong> if, as it goes,) till it have at length brought itdown to <strong>the</strong> whole corporeal world ; <strong>and</strong> when it hath done th<strong>is</strong>, <strong>is</strong> not ableto ftop <strong>the</strong>re nei<strong>the</strong>r, but extends it fur<strong>the</strong>r ftill to <strong>the</strong> animated parts<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, ftars <strong>and</strong> daemons ; <strong>the</strong> defign or dired: tendency <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> beingnothing elfe, but to lay a foundation for infi'nite poly<strong>the</strong>ifm, c<strong>of</strong>molatry,(or
