Which kind <strong>of</strong> Divine Fate hath notonly been formerly aflerted by <strong>the</strong> Stoicks, but alfo <strong>of</strong> late by divers modernwriters. "Wherefore <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> three fatalifms, or falfe hypo<strong>the</strong>fes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>unlverfe, mentioned in <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> book •, one <strong>is</strong> abfolute A<strong>the</strong>ifm; ano<strong>the</strong>r immoral Theifm, or religion without any natural juftice <strong>and</strong>morahcy, (<strong>all</strong> juft <strong>and</strong> utijuft, according to th<strong>is</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong>, being meer <strong>the</strong>ticalor faftitious things, made by arbitrary will <strong>and</strong> comm<strong>and</strong> only ;) Thethird <strong>and</strong> laft fuch a Theifm, as acknowledges not only a God, or omnipotentunderft<strong>and</strong>ing Being, but alfo natural juftice <strong>and</strong> morality, foundedin him, <strong>and</strong> derived from him y never<strong>the</strong>lefs no liberty from neceflity anywhere,<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore no diftributive or retributive juftice in <strong>the</strong> world."Whereas <strong>the</strong>fe three things are (as we conceive) <strong>the</strong> fundamentals or etfentials <strong>of</strong> true religion. Whichthree fundamentals <strong>of</strong> religion, are intimated by <strong>the</strong> author to <strong>the</strong> Hebrewsin <strong>the</strong>fe words *, he that cometh to God, mujl believe, that he <strong>is</strong>, <strong>and</strong> that he<strong>is</strong> a re^varder <strong>of</strong> th<strong>of</strong>e, who feek him out. For to feek out God here, <strong>is</strong>nothing elfe, but to feek a participation <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> image, or <strong>the</strong> recovery oJthat nature <strong>and</strong> life <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong>, which we have been alienated from. And <strong>the</strong>fethree things, namely, that <strong>all</strong> things do not float without a head <strong>and</strong> governor,but <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> an omnipotent underft<strong>and</strong>ing Being prefiding over <strong>all</strong> ; that th<strong>is</strong>God, hath an eflential goodnefs <strong>and</strong> juftice ; <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong> differences <strong>of</strong> good<strong>and</strong> evil moral, honeft <strong>and</strong> difhoneft, are not by meer will <strong>and</strong> law only,but
