ecaufeyou<strong>and</strong>2:viA71 Account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life <strong>and</strong> Writingsaccording to him, followed from <strong>the</strong>ir fyftem. Monfieur Le'Clerc return'd aaanfwer in <strong>the</strong> fifth Volume <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> Bihliothcqv.e Choifie * ; <strong>wherein</strong> he obfeiVd,that <strong>the</strong> plaftic or vital Natures, which th<strong>of</strong>e two Writers admit, cannotin <strong>the</strong> lealt favour <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ills •, <strong>the</strong>fe natures are only inftruments in<strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>and</strong> have no power nor efficacy, but what <strong>the</strong>y receivefrom him, who rules <strong>and</strong> direfts <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir aftions. I'hat <strong>the</strong>y are only inftrumentalcaufes produced <strong>and</strong> empioy'd by <strong>the</strong> chief <strong>and</strong> firft Caufe -, thatit cannot be faid, that a palace has been built up without art, becaufe not onlyhammers, rules, faws, b^c. but even <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> men, v/hich made ufe <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>feinftruments, aredeftitute <strong>of</strong> knowledge. It <strong>is</strong> fufficient, that <strong>the</strong> mind <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Builder direded <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong>fe things, <strong>and</strong> empioy'd <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> Execution <strong>of</strong>h<strong>is</strong> Defign. It <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore plain, that <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifts, who deny <strong>the</strong> Being <strong>of</strong>an intelligent Caufe, cannot retort <strong>the</strong> argument <strong>of</strong> Dr. Cudworth <strong>and</strong> Dr.Crew upon <strong>the</strong>m. Monfieur Bayle^ in h<strong>is</strong> Anfwer -f,endeavour'd to fhew, that if <strong>the</strong>fe Writers had confider'd <strong>the</strong> plaftic Natures only as inftruments<strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, th<strong>is</strong> Syftem would have been exp<strong>of</strong>ed to <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong> difficulties,to which <strong>the</strong> Cartefian hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> liable, <strong>and</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y intend to avoid. That <strong>the</strong>refore we muft fupp<strong>of</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir opinion to have been, that <strong>the</strong>fe Naturesare adive Principles, which do not want to be continu<strong>all</strong>y fet on <strong>and</strong> direfted ;but that it <strong>is</strong> fufficient, if God does but put <strong>the</strong>m in a proper fituation, <strong>and</strong> fuperintend<strong>the</strong>ir aftions, to fet <strong>the</strong>m right, if it be neceflary. Th<strong>is</strong> being <strong>the</strong>cafe, Monfieur Bayle pretends, that <strong>the</strong> Argument may be retorted againftthoi'e Writers. For, lays he, fince when <strong>the</strong> order <strong>and</strong> regularity <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong>world are <strong>all</strong>edg'd as a pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Being <strong>of</strong> a God, it <strong>is</strong> fupp<strong>of</strong>ed, that aBeing cannot produce a regular work, without having an idea <strong>of</strong> it ; yet, accordingto Dr. Cudworth, <strong>the</strong> plaftic Natures, which produce plants <strong>and</strong> animals, have not <strong>the</strong> leaft idea <strong>of</strong> what <strong>the</strong>y do. If it be anfwcr'd, that <strong>the</strong>y havebeen created with that faculty by a Being, who knows <strong>all</strong> , <strong>and</strong> wh<strong>of</strong>e Ideas <strong>the</strong>yonly put in execudon ; <strong>the</strong> Stratonician will reply, that if <strong>the</strong>y do it onlyas efficientCaufes, th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> as incomprehenfibleas that, which <strong>is</strong> objeded to him ; finceit <strong>is</strong> as difficult for any Being to perform a fchcme, which it does not underft<strong>and</strong>,but which ano<strong>the</strong>r underft<strong>and</strong>s, as it <strong>is</strong> to perform a fcheme, whichno Being at <strong>all</strong> has any nodon <strong>of</strong>. Since you acknowledge, will <strong>the</strong> Stratonicianfay, that God could endow fome Creatures with a power <strong>of</strong> producingexcellent works, tho' without any knowledge -, muft alfo confefs, that<strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> no neceffary connexion between <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> producing excellentworks, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>and</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir eftencc, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>manner <strong>of</strong> producing <strong>the</strong>m : confequently you ought not to aflfert, that <strong>the</strong>fethings cannot fubfift feparately in nature, <strong>and</strong> that nature cannot have <strong>of</strong> itfelf, v/hat, according to you, <strong>the</strong> plaftic Beings received from God. In ftiort,Monfieur Bayle afk'd, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>fe Writers maintain'd, that <strong>the</strong> Plaftic <strong>and</strong>Vital Natures arc only paffive inftruments in <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> God, as Monfieur LeClerc feem'd to fupp<strong>of</strong>e by h<strong>is</strong> Comparifon <strong>of</strong> an Archited. Monfieur LeC/frr anfwer'dll, that, according to Dr. Cudworth, <strong>the</strong> plaftic Natures were notinpaffive• i*. 283, &c.II Biblioth. Choifie. low.
