138 Th& Canting Ajlrohgical A<strong>the</strong>ijls. Book J<strong>and</strong> felf-exiftent from eternity, as a fenficive <strong>and</strong> rational matter. And<strong>the</strong>refore fuch an hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong> as th<strong>is</strong> can never ferve <strong>the</strong> turn <strong>of</strong> Acheifts. But <strong>all</strong> th<strong>of</strong>e, that are mafters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> craft <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifm, <strong>and</strong> thorowly catechizedor initiated in <strong>the</strong> dark myfteries <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, (as hath been already inculcated)do perfeftly agree in th<strong>is</strong>, that <strong>all</strong> animal, fentient <strong>and</strong> confciouslife, <strong>all</strong> fouls <strong>and</strong> minds, <strong>and</strong> confequently <strong>all</strong> human perfonalities, arc generatedout <strong>of</strong> matter, <strong>and</strong> corrupted again into it, or ra<strong>the</strong>r educed out <strong>of</strong>.nothing <strong>and</strong> reduced into nothing again. We underh<strong>and</strong> alfo, that <strong>the</strong>re are certain canting aftrological A<strong>the</strong>ifts^who would deduce <strong>all</strong> things from <strong>the</strong> occult qualities <strong>and</strong> influences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ftars, according to <strong>the</strong>ir different conjundlions, opp<strong>of</strong>itions <strong>and</strong> afpeds, ina certain blind <strong>and</strong> unaccountable manner. But <strong>the</strong>le being perfons devoid<strong>of</strong> <strong>all</strong> manner <strong>of</strong> fenfe, who nei<strong>the</strong>r fo much as pretend to give an account<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>fe ftars, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y be animals or not, as alfo whence <strong>the</strong>yderive <strong>the</strong>ir original, (which if <strong>the</strong>y did undertake to do a<strong>the</strong>iftic<strong>all</strong>y, <strong>the</strong>ymuft needs refolve <strong>the</strong>mfelves at length into one or o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> th<strong>of</strong>e hypo<strong>the</strong>fesalready prop<strong>of</strong>ed) <strong>the</strong>refore, as we conceive, <strong>the</strong>y deferve not <strong>the</strong> Jeaft confideration. But we think fit here to obferve, that fuch devotos to <strong>the</strong> hcavenlybodies, as look upon <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ftars as petty deities, but <strong>the</strong> funas <strong>the</strong> fupreme deity <strong>and</strong> monarch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> univerfe, in <strong>the</strong> mean time conceivingit alfo to be perfeftly intellcflual, fwhich <strong>is</strong> in a manner th&famewith <strong>the</strong> Clean<strong>the</strong>an hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong>) are not fo much to be accounted A<strong>the</strong>ifts,as fpurious, paganical <strong>and</strong> idolatrous Theifts. And upon <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong>fe confixderationswe conclude again, that <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> no o<strong>the</strong>r phil<strong>of</strong>ophick form <strong>of</strong>A<strong>the</strong>ifm, that can eafily be devifed, befides <strong>the</strong>fe four mentioned, <strong>the</strong>Anaxim<strong>and</strong>rian, <strong>the</strong> Democritical, <strong>the</strong> Stoical, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stratonica!.XXXIII. Amongft which forms <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifm, <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> yet ano<strong>the</strong>r difFc^renceto be obferved, <strong>and</strong> accordingly ano<strong>the</strong>r diftribution to be made <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>m. It being firft premifed, that <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong>fe forementioned forts <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifts(if <strong>the</strong>y will fpeak confiftently <strong>and</strong> agreeably to <strong>the</strong>ir own principles) muftneeds fupp<strong>of</strong>e <strong>all</strong> things to be one way or o<strong>the</strong>r neceftary. For thoughEpicurus introduced contingent liberty, yet it <strong>is</strong> well known, that he <strong>the</strong>reinplainly contradiiSbed h<strong>is</strong> own principles. And th<strong>is</strong> indeed was <strong>the</strong> firft<strong>and</strong> principal thing intended by us, in th<strong>is</strong> whole undertaking, to confutethat falfe hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mundane fyftem, which makes <strong>all</strong> actions <strong>and</strong>events necelTary upon a<strong>the</strong>iftick grounds, but efpeci<strong>all</strong>y in <strong>the</strong> mechanickway. Wherefore in <strong>the</strong> next place we muft obferve, that though <strong>the</strong> principles<strong>of</strong> <strong>all</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifts introduce necefiity, yet <strong>the</strong> neceffity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>fe A<strong>the</strong>ifts<strong>is</strong> not one <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fame, but <strong>of</strong> two diftcrent kinds; fome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m fupp<strong>of</strong>inga necefiuy. <strong>of</strong> dead <strong>and</strong> ftupid matter, which <strong>is</strong> that, which <strong>is</strong>- commonlymeant by uAinri avafx^, or material neceflity, <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> alfo calfed byjirijiotle, an abfolute neceflity <strong>of</strong> things: o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> necefiity <strong>of</strong> a plaftickJife, which <strong>the</strong> fame Ariftolk c<strong>all</strong>s an hypo<strong>the</strong>tical neceflity. For <strong>the</strong> Anaxim<strong>and</strong>rian<strong>and</strong> Dcmocritick A<strong>the</strong>ifts do both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m afiTert a material <strong>and</strong>abfolute neceflity <strong>of</strong> <strong>all</strong> things , one in <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> qualities, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong>motion
