Wherefore <strong>the</strong>re does not feem to be anyroom now left for any o<strong>the</strong>r form <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifm, befides <strong>the</strong>fe four, to thruft in.And we think fit here again to inculcate, what hath been already intimated,that one gr<strong>and</strong> difference amongft <strong>the</strong>fe feveral torms <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifm <strong>is</strong> th<strong>is</strong>,that fome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m attributing no life at <strong>all</strong> to matter, as fuch, nor indeedacknowledging any plaftick life <strong>of</strong> nature, diftinfl from <strong>the</strong> animal, <strong>and</strong>fupp<strong>of</strong>ing every thing whatfoever <strong>is</strong> in <strong>the</strong> world, befides uAn aVoio?, <strong>the</strong> barefubftance <strong>of</strong> matter confidcred as devoid <strong>of</strong> <strong>all</strong> qualities, (that <strong>is</strong>, mere extendedbulk,) to be generated <strong>and</strong> corrupted ; confequently refolve, that <strong>all</strong>manner <strong>of</strong> life whatfoever <strong>is</strong> generable <strong>and</strong> corruptible, or educible oat otnothing, <strong>and</strong> reducible to nothing again •, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>fe are <strong>the</strong> An:;xim<strong>and</strong>rian<strong>and</strong> Democritick A<strong>the</strong>ifms. But <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, which are <strong>the</strong> Stoical <strong>and</strong> Stratonical,do on <strong>the</strong> contrary fupp<strong>of</strong>e fomc life to be fundamental <strong>and</strong> original,efTential <strong>and</strong> fubftantial, ingencrable <strong>and</strong> incorruptible, as being a firllprinciple <strong>of</strong> things ; nevcr<strong>the</strong>lefs, th<strong>is</strong> not to be any animal, confcious <strong>and</strong>fclf-perceptive life, but a plaftick life <strong>of</strong> nature only -, <strong>all</strong> A<strong>the</strong>ifts ftill a-greeing in th<strong>of</strong>i two forementioned things •, firft, that <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> no o<strong>the</strong>r lub-Itance in <strong>the</strong> work! befides body •, fecondly, that <strong>all</strong> animal life, fenfe <strong>and</strong>felf-perception, confcious underft<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> perfonality are generated <strong>and</strong>corrupted, fucccffively educed out <strong>of</strong> nothing <strong>and</strong> reduced into nothingagain.XXXII, Indeed we are not ignorant, that fome, who feem to be wellwiftiersto A<strong>the</strong>ifm, have talk'd fometimes <strong>of</strong> fenfitive <strong>and</strong> rational matteras having a mind to fuppoie, three feveral forts <strong>of</strong> matter in <strong>the</strong> univerfe,fpecific<strong>all</strong>y different from one ano<strong>the</strong>r, that were origin<strong>all</strong>y fuch, <strong>and</strong> felfexiftentfrom eternity ; namely fenflefs, fenfitive <strong>and</strong> rational : As if <strong>the</strong>mundane fyftem might be conceived to arife from a certain jumble <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>fethree feveral forts <strong>of</strong> matter, as it werefcuffling toge<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> dark, withouta God, <strong>and</strong> fo producing brute animals <strong>and</strong> men. But as th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> a mere precarioushypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re being no imaginable account to be given, how<strong>the</strong>re fhould come to be fuch an effential difference betwixt matters, or whyth<strong>is</strong> piece <strong>of</strong> matter fhould be fenfitive, <strong>and</strong> that rational, when ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>is</strong>altoge<strong>the</strong>r fenOefs ; fo <strong>the</strong> fuggeftors <strong>of</strong> it are but mere novices in A<strong>the</strong>ifm,<strong>and</strong> a kind <strong>of</strong> bungling well-wifhers to it. Firft, becaufe, according to th<strong>is</strong>hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong>, no life would be produced or deftroyed in <strong>the</strong> fucceftive generations<strong>and</strong> corruptions <strong>of</strong> animals, but only concreted <strong>and</strong> ll-creted in <strong>the</strong>m ;<strong>and</strong> confequently <strong>all</strong> human perfonalities muft be eternal <strong>and</strong> incorruptible :Which <strong>is</strong> <strong>all</strong> one, as to affert <strong>the</strong> prs <strong>and</strong> p<strong>of</strong>t-exiftencc <strong>of</strong> <strong>all</strong> fouls frometernity to eternity, a thing that <strong>all</strong> genuine -<strong>and</strong> thorow-pac'd A<strong>the</strong>ifts arein a manner as abhorrent from, as <strong>the</strong>y are from <strong>the</strong> Deity itfelf. And fecondly,becaufe <strong>the</strong>re can be no imaginable reafon given by <strong>the</strong>m, why<strong>the</strong>re might not be as well, a certain divine matter perfcdly itltellet^lualT<strong>and</strong>
