Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> firft argument, ufed efpeci<strong>all</strong>y by our modem Democriticks, againfb a Deity, that becaufe <strong>the</strong>y can have no phantaftick idea <strong>of</strong> it, nor fully comprehend<strong>all</strong> that <strong>is</strong> concluded in <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, that tlierefore it <strong>is</strong> but an incomprehenfiblenothing.VI. Secondly, ano<strong>the</strong>r argument much infilled on by <strong>the</strong> old DcmocritickA<strong>the</strong>ifts, <strong>is</strong> direfted againil <strong>the</strong> divine omnipotence <strong>and</strong> creative power, after th<strong>is</strong> manner. By God <strong>is</strong> always underftood a creator <strong>of</strong> fomcthing oro<strong>the</strong>r out <strong>of</strong> nothing. For however <strong>the</strong> Thcifts be here divided amongft<strong>the</strong>mfelves, fome <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m believing, that <strong>the</strong>re was once nothing at <strong>all</strong>exifting in th<strong>is</strong> whole fpace, which <strong>is</strong> now occupied by <strong>the</strong> world, befides <strong>the</strong>Deity, <strong>and</strong> that he was <strong>the</strong>n a folitary being, fo that <strong>the</strong> fubftance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>whole corporeal univerfe had a temporary beginning, <strong>and</strong> novity <strong>of</strong> exiftence,<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> it hath now continued but for fo manyyears only. O<strong>the</strong>rs perfuading <strong>the</strong>mfelves, that though <strong>the</strong> matter <strong>and</strong>fubftance at leaft, (if not <strong>the</strong> form alfo) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corporeal world, didexift from eternity, yet never<strong>the</strong>lefs, <strong>the</strong>y both alike proceeded from <strong>the</strong>Deity by way <strong>of</strong> emanation, <strong>and</strong> do continu<strong>all</strong>y depend upon it, in <strong>the</strong>fame manner as light, though coeval with <strong>the</strong> fun, yet proceeded from<strong>the</strong> fun, <strong>and</strong> depends upon it, being always, as it were, made a-new byit ; wherefore, according to th<strong>is</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>f<strong>is</strong>, though things had no antecedentnon-entity in time, yet <strong>the</strong>y were as little <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mfelves, <strong>and</strong>owed <strong>all</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir being as much to <strong>the</strong> Deity, as if <strong>the</strong>y had been once aftu<strong>all</strong>ynothing, <strong>the</strong>y being, as it were, perpetu<strong>all</strong>y created out <strong>of</strong> nothingby it. Laltly, o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> th<strong>of</strong>e Thcifts refolving, that <strong>the</strong> matter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>corporeal univerfe was not only from eternity, but alfo felf-exiftent <strong>and</strong>uncreated, or independent upon any Deity as to its being -, yet <strong>the</strong>forms <strong>and</strong> qualities <strong>of</strong> <strong>all</strong> inanimate bodies, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> fouls <strong>of</strong> <strong>all</strong>Animals in <strong>the</strong> fucceffive generations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, (being taken for entitiesdiifind from <strong>the</strong> matter) were created by <strong>the</strong> Deity out <strong>of</strong> nothing. We fay, though <strong>the</strong>re be f.ich difference among <strong>the</strong> Theifts <strong>the</strong>mfelves,Iyet
