P. Courrieu & M. Lequeux / Anagram Effects 25 / 40EXPERIMENT 4In Experiments 2 and 3, we observed non-significant tendencies for an anagramprime to facilitate the recognition of infrequent words possessing lexicalanagrams. These tendencies were observed only at the longest SOAs.However, we suspected that this was not linked to the SOA per se, sincehal-00429184, version 1 - 1 Nov 2009facilitating anagram priming effects have previously been observed with amasked priming technique at a SOA of only 40 ms (Courrieu, 1985, Exp. 2). Onthe other hand, in the present Experiments 2 and 3, a number of participantssaid that the prime was a hindrance and that they attempted to ignore it. InExperiment 4 we ask: what happens whenever an anagram prime is fullyprocessed? This can be obtained if the participants must provide a response onthe prime as well as on the target.MethodParticipantsThirty-two university students (16 women and 16 men) volunteered toparticipate in the experiment. Their native language was French, and they allhad normal or corrected-to-normal vision.Material
