Then a tone rang, and500 ms later, the stimulus was displayed with the third letter placed at thefixation point. The participant was supposed to decide as quickly and asaccurately as possible whether the stimulus was a word in the French language.The lexical decision was entered by pressing a key marked "oui" (yes) or a keymarked "non" (no). The participant's responses and response times (in ms)were recorded by the computer. The stimulus disappeared when the answerwas given, and the next trial started 3 seconds later.
