CoolingPrecautions should be taken to limit the amount of heat produced during the drilling process:use an appropriate drilling rate, provide copious amounts of irrigation, and periodicallywithdraw the drill completely to allow the irrigant to flush out the debris. The SurgiGuide contains holes near the entry point of the drill into the bone. Use these holesfor cooling and for the purpose of bone chip evacuation.Depth controlFigure 3: Drilling guided by SurgiGuide and cooling with irrigant 1The drilling cylinders have a total length of 5 mm. Your SurgiGuide may come with writteninstructions describing depth indications. If this is not the case, remember that the drillingtubes are positioned relative to the highest point on the bone in the section above the implant.Verify the exact depth of the implant site after the initial drilling. If for any reason the depth of the implant site needs to be increased, it is advisable tocontinue using the SurgiGuide while drilling to the desired depth. It may be necessary, if the longest available drill is too short, to increase the depth of the sitewithout the use of a SurgiGuide. In order to limit the amount of deviation, drill along thecenterline of the shaft until the desired depth is obtained. However, drilling without theSurgiGuide, may reduce the accuracy.Once you have finished drilling for all the implants, clinically assess the position/direction ofthe implant sites before you proceed with the next sized guide.SURGICAL PROCEDURESImportant note:The stainless steel tubes need to bepositioned relative to the highest point onthe bone surface in the section abovethe implant. This is necessary in order to prevent thestainless steel cylinders from beingpushed into the bone and injuring thepatient and to assure that the tubes donot hinder the proper positioning of theSurgiGuide. As a consequence, the distancebetween the top of the guiding cylinderand the coronal point of the plannedimplant can be more than 5 mm.For this reason, depth control of theimplant site is very important.cylinderbone surfaceimplant5virtual implantprolongation58www.SimPlant.comSurgiGuide Cookbook
