REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 6—ATHLETICS6.3—ATHLETICS POLICIES6.3.1—PURPOSE OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICSSince it is a major purpose <strong>of</strong> the University to provide the opportunity for all students to develop tothe fullest possible degree all desirable abilities and skills, it shall be the purpose <strong>of</strong> intercollegiateathletics to provide the opportunity for each student to attain pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in athletics endeavors. Theprogram shall be conducted in the realization that athletics is not an end in itself, but merely one <strong>of</strong> thecontributing factors in the total education <strong>of</strong> the student.The responsibility for the program <strong>of</strong> intercollegiate athletics shall rest upon the President <strong>of</strong> theUniversity with the same faculty participation in the formulation <strong>of</strong> athletics policies that exists in theformulation <strong>of</strong> policies in other fields.The amateur status <strong>of</strong> intercollegiate sports shall be carefully maintained. To this end, every studentathleteshould be required, as a condition <strong>of</strong> eligibility, to proceed normally in academic work toward theattainment <strong>of</strong> a University degree.A policy <strong>of</strong> providing financial aid to students who participate in athletics, when carefully regulatedand limited in extent, is approved.The University shall promote and insist upon sportsmanlike conduct on the part <strong>of</strong> those whoparticipate in its sports, as well as those <strong>of</strong> the student body who support its teams.(RM, 4-9-53, pp. 4578-79; 12-02-03, p. 28868)6.3.2—MISSION STATEMENTThe mission <strong>of</strong> the University Athletics Department is to inspire champions today and prepareleaders for tomorrow by providing an excellent nurturing environment to enable student-athletes toachieve their highest academic, athletic and personal aspirations. The Athletics Department:• is dedicated to the educational mission <strong>of</strong> the University;• maintains an appreciation <strong>of</strong> and support for the equitable opportunities for all studentathletesand staff, including women and minorities;• adheres to and encourages principles <strong>of</strong> good conduct and sportsmanship, including respectfor self and others at all times; and• emphasizes excellence and commitment to integrity in all its endeavors.THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 297
