REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 5—UNIVERSITY COMMUNITYSECTION 5 — UNIVERSITY COMMUNITYThe Board of Regents is constitutionally vested with the governance of the University. Within itsauthority is the governance of the University community, including without limitation, certain studenthearings and appeals, the fraternity and sorority relationship with the University, and student activity fees.Specific provisions pertaining to the governance of the University community and related matters may beset forth in the faculty and staff handbooks, student handbooks such as the Student Code ofResponsibilities and Conduct for the Norman Campus, and/or other official policy documents of therespective campuses. Any modification to a Board of Regents’ policy in the policy documents referred toabove or elsewhere must be made through action of the Board of Regents.5.1—ACADEMIC APPEALS BOARDS-NORMAN CAMPUSEach college of the University shall establish an Academic Appeals Board (“Board”) consisting of anequal number of students and faculty. (1) Faculty members of the Board will be chosen by the faculty ofthe college for a term determined by the faculty. (2) Student members of the Board will be appointed fora term of one year by the dean of the college upon recommendations from the UOSA President.Each Academic Appeals Board will hear cases in which the issue to be resolved is that of prejudicedor capricious evaluation or alleged inability to speak the English language to the extent necessary toadequately instruct students.Except for those cases which arise in the College of Law, the following procedures shall apply. (Forthe procedures in the College of Law, contact the Office of the Dean.)1. A Board will hear a case only after a student has notified an instructor of a dispute over anacademic evaluation and after the student has made an unsuccessful attempt to resolve differenceswith the instructor, in consultation with the department chair if necessary. In cases of end-oftermevaluations, a student must notify an instructor of a dispute over an academic evaluation andmust attempt to resolve differences no later than February 15 for the previous Fall semester orwinter intersession, and no later than September 15 in cases of end-of-term evaluations for theprevious Spring semester, Spring intersession, or summer term. In cases of an evaluation madeknown to a student during the semester, the student must notify an instructor of a dispute over anacademic evaluation and must attempt to resolve differences no later than 15 calendar days(excluding Saturdays, Sundays and University holidays from classes) after the results ofevaluation are made known to the student. If a student fails to notify an instructor or fails toattempt resolution within the appropriate time limit, the Board shall deny any request for ahearing on the claim unless, in the view of the Board, the student has been prevented fromcomplying with the appropriate time limit for reasons beyond his/her control (as, for example, inthe case of a student being called into military service).2. The filing of a written request for a hearing on a claim before the appropriate Academic AppealsBoard shall be within ten calendar days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and University holidaysfrom classes) following the day when the attempts at resolution in paragraph (1) above areTHE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 265
