REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICSBecause <strong>of</strong> the importance diplomas play pr<strong>of</strong>essionally in the disciplines associated with the HealthSciences Center, it will be understood that the Health Sciences Center will, when it is able to do so,supply diplomas as identical as possible to the original diploma and, when that is not possible, will usethe regulations above.Posthumous DegreesThe Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Policy Manual authorizes the granting <strong>of</strong>posthumous degrees. Such degrees shall generally be unearned, nonacademic degrees recognizing themeritorious but incomplete earned work <strong>of</strong> a deceased student. In general, the student to whom aposthumous degree is to be awarded should have been a senior with ninety or more earned credit hours.Requests to confer a posthumous degree must be approved by the faculty, dean, Senior Vice President andProvost, and Board <strong>of</strong> Regents before being forwarded for consideration by the Oklahoma State Regentsfor Higher Education. Such requests are considered on a case-by-case basis.CERTIFICATESCertificates bearing the name and the Seal or Coat <strong>of</strong> Arms <strong>of</strong> the University may be issued only bythe University, pursuant to the applicable legislation in each instance, as created by the President andBoard <strong>of</strong> Regents and/or the State as represented by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education orthe Governor or Legislature <strong>of</strong> the State <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma. Academic colleges, schools, departments, andother subdivisions <strong>of</strong> the University do not have such authority. (Oklahoma State Regents for HigherEducation policy, II-2-41,6)CREDIT CERTIFICATESThe Office <strong>of</strong> Admissions and Records is charged with the responsibility <strong>of</strong> administering theregulations governing the issuance <strong>of</strong> certificates. Except for those prepared by the Health SciencesCenter and by the College <strong>of</strong> Continuing Education as provided elsewhere in this policy, all certificatesare to be printed under the supervision <strong>of</strong> the Office <strong>of</strong> Admissions and Records with their design andtypography being prescribed the Office <strong>of</strong> Admissions and Records.No certificates intended as an extension or elaboration <strong>of</strong> the curricular requirements for a degreeshall be issued by the University or any subdivision there<strong>of</strong>, nor shall certificates be issued for courses,programs <strong>of</strong> study, or stages required by the University in the fulfillment <strong>of</strong> the prescriptions for a degree.Curricular programs based upon University policy and/or state legislation for which University creditis allowed but for which no degrees are granted (as, for example, the program in Office Administration)may be recognized by certificates, in a form to be prescribed from time to time.Certificates for forms <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional pr<strong>of</strong>iciency other than those described above may be issuedonly if programs for the achievement <strong>of</strong> such pr<strong>of</strong>iciency have been approved by the Board <strong>of</strong> Regentsand/or the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and are incorporated in the <strong>of</strong>ficial publications<strong>of</strong> the University describing its curricular requirements. Nothing in this section shall be construed tocontravene the provisions <strong>of</strong> Section 4 here<strong>of</strong>.THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 108
