REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICS2.6.3—STUDENT ACADEMIC INTEGRITYAcademic integrity means honesty and responsibility in scholarship. The basic assumptionsregarding student academic work at the University are:a) Students attend the University in order to learn and grow intellectually.b) Academic assignments exist for the sake <strong>of</strong> this goal and grades exist to show how fullythe goal is attained.c) A student’s academic work and grades should result from the student’s own effort tolearn and grow. Academic work completed any other way is pointless, and gradesobtained any other way are fraudulent.Academic integrity means understanding and respecting these basic truths, without which nouniversity can exist. Academic misconduct violates the assumptions at the heart <strong>of</strong> all learning. Itdestroys the mutual trust and respect that should exist between student and pr<strong>of</strong>essor. Academicmisconduct is unfair to students who earn their grades honestly.ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT CODEAcademic misconduct includes (a) cheating (using unauthorized materials, information, or study aidsin any academic exercise or on national board examination), plagiarism, falsification <strong>of</strong> records,unauthorized possession <strong>of</strong> examinations, intimidation, and any and all other actions that may improperlyaffect the evaluation <strong>of</strong> a student’s academic performance or achievement; (b) assisting others in any suchact; or (c) attempts to engage in such acts.GENERAL PROVISIONSBASIC PRINCIPLE OF HONESTYHonesty is a fundamental precept in all academic activities, and those privileged to be members <strong>of</strong> auniversity community have a special obligation to observe the highest standards <strong>of</strong> honesty and a right toexpect the same standards <strong>of</strong> all others. Academic misconduct in any form is inimical to the purposes andfunctions <strong>of</strong> the University and therefore is unacceptable and rigorously proscribed.ACADEMIC MISCONDUCTDEFINITIONSAny act which improperly affects the evaluation <strong>of</strong> a student’s academic performance orachievement, including but not limited to the following:a) Cheating: the use <strong>of</strong> unauthorized materials, methods, or information in any academicexercise, including improper collaboration;b) Plagiarism: the representation <strong>of</strong> the words or ideas <strong>of</strong> another as one’s own, including:THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 88
