REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICS2.6—GENERAL ACADEMIC ISSUES2.6.1—DENIAL OF ADMISSIONAny person who is otherwise academically qualified, meets all University admissions requirementsand is denied admission for any reason may appeal that denial by requesting a hearing before theCommittee on Academic Regulations within 15 University business days <strong>of</strong> postmark. The Committeeshall proceed as quickly as possible to hear the matter so that one who has been wrongfully deniedadmission will not be prejudiced in his or her ability to perform the academic work required <strong>of</strong> him or herin that semester. (RM, 4-12-73, pp. 12125-26; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)2.6.2—ACADEMIC APPEALS BOARDSIn each college <strong>of</strong> the University there shall be established an Academic Appeals Board consisting <strong>of</strong>an equal number <strong>of</strong> students and faculty. Faculty members <strong>of</strong> the Board will be chosen by the faculty <strong>of</strong>the college for a term determined by the faculty. Student members <strong>of</strong> the Board will be appointed for aterm <strong>of</strong> one year by the dean <strong>of</strong> the college upon recommendations from the UOSA Student President.The responsibility for academic evaluations <strong>of</strong> students rests with the faculty. If a student feelswrongfully and unfairly treated by an instructor and if he or she is unable to resolve the matter inconference with the instructor or the departmental chair/director <strong>of</strong> the academic unit, an appeal may bemade with the Academic Appeals Board <strong>of</strong> the college <strong>of</strong>fering the course. Any thesis and dissertationappeals shall be heard by the Graduate College appeals board.The Health Sciences Center and Norman Campus Faculty Handbooks and the student handbooksinclude the policy on academic appeals.Each Academic Appeals Board will hear cases in which the issue to be resolved is that <strong>of</strong> prejudiced orcapricious evaluation, or alleged inability to speak the English language to the extent necessary toadequately instruct students.Except for those cases which arise in the College <strong>of</strong> Law, the following procedures shall apply. (For theprocedures in the College <strong>of</strong> Law, refer to the College <strong>of</strong> Law Code <strong>of</strong> Academic Responsibility).An Academic Appeals Board will hear a case only after the student has notified an instructor <strong>of</strong> a disputeover an academic evaluation and after the student has made an unsuccessful attempt to resolve differenceswith the instructor, if necessary in consultation with the department chair. In cases <strong>of</strong> end-<strong>of</strong>-termevaluations, a student must notify an instructor <strong>of</strong> a dispute over an academic evaluation and must attemptto resolve differences no later than February 15 for the previous fall semester or winter intersession, andno later than September 15 in cases <strong>of</strong> end-<strong>of</strong>-term evaluations for the previous spring semester, springintersession, or summer term. In cases <strong>of</strong> an evaluation made known to a student during the term, thestudent must notify an instructor <strong>of</strong> a dispute over an academic evaluation and must attempt to resolvedifferences no later than 15 calendar days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and University holidays fromclasses) after the results <strong>of</strong> evaluation are made known to the student. If a student fails to notify aninstructor or fails to attempt resolution within the appropriate time limit, the Academic Appeals Boardshall deny any request for a hearing on the claim unless, in the view <strong>of</strong> the Academic Appeals Board, theTHE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 85
