REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICSPresidential Pr<strong>of</strong>essors will be given the option each year <strong>of</strong> receiving the pr<strong>of</strong>essorship funding as:- a (taxable) salary supplement plus associated fringe benefits paid in two installments, one in the fallsemester and one in the spring semester, or as a summer salary, or- a faculty development grant within their departmental 1<strong>22</strong>-7XXX account for use in travel, graduatestudent stipends, instructional enhancement, and research development, or- a combination <strong>of</strong> (1) and (2).Term <strong>of</strong> AwardThe Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship is granted for a four-year term with the faculty member receiving the funding each yearbased on faculty rank. (RM, 9-26-95, p. 24589; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)REGENTS’ PROFESSORSHIPSCriteria for SelectionTo qualify for a Regents’ Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship, a faculty member must have rendered outstanding service to theacademic community or to an academic or pr<strong>of</strong>essional discipline through extraordinary achievement inacademic administration or pr<strong>of</strong>essional service.Nomination and Selection ProceduresNominees for Regents’ Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships shall be presented to the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents by the President afterconferring with the Chair <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents, the Chair <strong>of</strong> the appropriate Faculty Senate, and theUniversity Council on Faculty Awards and Honors. Recommendations for the appointment may be madeto the President by any academic unit, administrative <strong>of</strong>ficer, or faculty member, but suchrecommendations are not required.PerquisitesIn the year <strong>of</strong> designation as a Regents’ Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, the person receiving the award will receive a one-timecash award <strong>of</strong> up to $6,000 and a permanent salary increase <strong>of</strong> the same amount starting in the subsequentfiscal year. Persons named Regents’ Pr<strong>of</strong>essors on or after Spring 1996 are not eligible for considerationas Presidential Pr<strong>of</strong>essors.Term <strong>of</strong> the AwardThe term <strong>of</strong> a Regents’ Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship is continuous until retirement.(RM, 5-11-78, pp. 14957-8; 3-15-89, p. 20938; 9-26-95, p. 24594; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)2.5.2—FACULTY AWARDSThe University recognizes teaching; research and creative/scholarly activity; and pr<strong>of</strong>essional andUniversity service and public outreach by its faculty by presenting several annual awards to deservingnominees. Some awards (including the Merrick Teaching Award) are privately funded, and criteria andmethod <strong>of</strong> selection are set forth in joint University-donor contracts.THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 82
