REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICS2.5—FACULTY HONORS2.5.1—DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORSHIPSRecipients <strong>of</strong> distinguished pr<strong>of</strong>essorships are deemed to have achieved unusual distinction inteaching; research and creative/scholarly activity; and pr<strong>of</strong>essional and University service and publicoutreach. The University awards the following distinguished pr<strong>of</strong>essorships:• David Ross Boyd Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships• George Lynn Cross Research Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships• Presidential Pr<strong>of</strong>essorships• Regents’ Pr<strong>of</strong>essorshipsAll nominations shall be made known to the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents at least 20 days prior to the time thatnominees’ names appear on an agenda for action.(RM, 5-12-66, p. 8524; amended 5-11-78, p. 14958; 9-26-95, p. 24589; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)DAVID ROSS BOYD PROFESSORSHIPSCriteria for SelectionTo qualify for a David Ross Boyd Pr<strong>of</strong>essorship, a faculty member must have consistently demonstratedoutstanding teaching, guidance, and leadership for students in an academic discipline or in aninterdisciplinary program within the University. Among more specific criteria which may be consideredare the degree to which the candidate:• establishes, communicates, and fulfills appropriate course and program goals;• utilizes formats and techniques that are appropriate to the students served;• measures student performance appropriately and fairly;• establishes relationships with students that facilitate mutual respect and communication;• stimulates an intellectual inquisitiveness and communicates methods <strong>of</strong> pursuing that inquiry;• brings about change in students’ knowledge, motives, and attitudes;• fosters the pr<strong>of</strong>essional development <strong>of</strong> colleagues and serves as a model for colleagues andstudents; contributes to the success <strong>of</strong> students.Nomination ProcedureInitiation - The Senior Vice President and Provosts will solicit recommendations for the pr<strong>of</strong>essorship bySeptember and announce appropriate schedules for processing the nominations.Recommendations - Any academic unit may submit to the college dean the name <strong>of</strong> one tenured facultymember with the rank <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor. The recommending unit will be responsible for assembling thesupporting documentation. The dean <strong>of</strong> the college will review the recommendations and add his or hercomments to the recommendation(s) considered to be most worthy. The dean will submit all therecommendations and supporting documentation to the Senior Vice President and Provost. The SeniorVice President and Provosts will forward these materials to the University Council on Faculty Awardsand Honors.THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 77
