REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICSappointments may be changed to the tenure track in which case all University policies relating totenure shall apply. With the approval <strong>of</strong> the chair <strong>of</strong> the academic unit, dean, and Senior VicePresident and Provost, up to three (3) years <strong>of</strong> academic service in a consecutive term appointmentmay be credited toward the pretenure period.(b) At the request <strong>of</strong> the faculty member and with the approval <strong>of</strong> the chair <strong>of</strong> the academic unit, dean,and Senior Vice President and Provost, faculty members who are in the tenure track may be changedto a consecutive term appointment at any time during the six (6) year pretenure period, but prior tothe initiation <strong>of</strong> procedures for tenure decision (see Section 3.9.5). A faculty member who changesfrom a tenure-track appointment to a consecutive term appointment will not be eligible for futuretenure consideration.(c) Before a regular faculty member assumes primarily administrative duties during the pretenureperiod, a written agreement must be reached between the faculty member, the chair <strong>of</strong> the academicunit, the dean, and Senior Vice President and Provost, as to whether the faculty member will bereviewed for tenure, at what time, and under what conditions.Pretenure Periods(a)Full-time tenure-track faculty will generally have a pretenure period <strong>of</strong> six (6) years.The first year <strong>of</strong> the pretenure period for a faculty member whose effective date <strong>of</strong> service is betweenJuly 1 and December 31 will be that academic year. If the effective date <strong>of</strong> service is between January 1and <strong>June</strong> 30, the first year <strong>of</strong> the pretenure period will begin with the next academic year.(b)(c)(d)(e)(f)In certain circumstances, the chair <strong>of</strong> the academic unit and dean may request an extension <strong>of</strong> thepretenure period not to exceed three (3) years.For assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essors, the pretenure period may include up to a total <strong>of</strong> three years in prior fulltimeservice in a consecutive term or tenure-track appointment at the OUHSC or in pr<strong>of</strong>essorialranks at another institution. For associate pr<strong>of</strong>essors and pr<strong>of</strong>essors up to a total <strong>of</strong> four years priorservice may be included (see Section 3.2.5(c)). The faculty member may request in writing at thetime <strong>of</strong> the first regular tenure-track appointment that prior service be included. Inclusion <strong>of</strong> priorservice requires approval by the chair <strong>of</strong> the academic unit, the dean, and the Senior Vice Presidentand Provost.Prior full-time service as instructor or in a comparable non-pr<strong>of</strong>essorial rank at other institutions <strong>of</strong>higher education may be counted as part <strong>of</strong> the pretenure period if requested by the applicant andapproved in writing by the chair <strong>of</strong> the academic unit, dean, and Senior Vice President and Provost atthe time <strong>of</strong> the first regular appointment.Ordinarily, prior full-time service on temporary appointments at The University <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma is notcounted in the pretenure period but may be if requested by the applicant and approved in writing bythe chair <strong>of</strong> the academic unit, dean, and Senior Vice President and Provost.A new faculty member appointed at the rank <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor or associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor may be grantedtenure from the date <strong>of</strong> appointment. The determination <strong>of</strong> tenure shall be made as specified inSection 3.9.5 (b) through (r).THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 43
