REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICSImpact EvaluationThe impact <strong>of</strong> research faculty appointments will be reviewed at regular intervals. The first such reviewwill occur within three years; then review will occur every five years. These periodic evaluations will beundertaken by the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Vice President for Research, the UniversityVice President for Technology Development, and the Faculty Senate or their designees.(RM, 5-7-99, p. 26381; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)2.2.5—ENDOWED CHAIRS AND PROFESSORSHIPSFaculty may be appointed to endowed chairs and pr<strong>of</strong>essorships.CRITERIA FOR SELECTIONSpecific criteria for the selection <strong>of</strong> occupants may be established for particular chairs as appropriate.To qualify for an endowed chair or pr<strong>of</strong>essorship, a faculty member must be distinguished within aparticular academic field or an interdisciplinary program.SEARCH COMMITTEEThe President, with advice and counsel <strong>of</strong> the appropriate Senior Vice President and Provost, theappropriate dean, and appropriate chair/director, will appoint the Search Committee. Search Committeesfor occupants <strong>of</strong> endowed chairs and pr<strong>of</strong>essorships shall be composed <strong>of</strong> two faculty members from theacademic unit concerned, two outside individuals distinguished within the relevant area and appointed bythe President, and either the dean <strong>of</strong> the relevant college or a faculty member appointed by that dean.(The Board <strong>of</strong> Regents prefers and expects the dean to serve.)At least one member will be from outside the University and at least one member will be fromanother college. The President and the Senior Vice President and Provost will meet with the SearchCommittee (and the dean and department head if appropriate) to hear their recommendations. The SeniorVice President and Provost, after consultation, may make a recommendation to the President. ThePresident may approve and forward the appointment to the Board <strong>of</strong> Regents or reject it and requestfurther searching.(RM, 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)TERM OF THE AWARDFor endowed chairs only, the appointee must be a tenured faculty member or must receive tenure onappointment to an endowed chair in accord with the applicable Faculty Handbook. Endowedpr<strong>of</strong>essorships do not carry such stipulations. To the extent the appointee’s performance and conductremain satisfactory to the University, the term <strong>of</strong> an endowed chair, unless the endowment contractprovisions provide otherwise, is continuous until resignation, retirement, or the endowment is withdrawn.(RM, 4-14-77, p. 14348; amended 6-15-78, p. 15036; 6-27-95, p. 24483; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)THE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA 26
