REGENTS’ POLICY MANUALSECTION 2—ACADEMICSacademic rank higher than Instructor; non-commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficers and petty <strong>of</strong>ficers shall be given the title<strong>of</strong> Instructor.An academic rank, once assigned to an <strong>of</strong>ficer, shall be retained by him or her during the entire tenurewith the University unless he or she is promoted to a higher faculty position, even though a more seniorline <strong>of</strong>ficer becomes either the commanding <strong>of</strong>ficer or executive <strong>of</strong>ficer, except when regulations <strong>of</strong> abranch <strong>of</strong> the Defense Department provide that only one <strong>of</strong>ficer may be designated as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor andAssociate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor on a campus.(RM, 2-13-52, p. 4254-55; 6-25-70, p. 10379; 1-27-<strong>2004</strong>, p. 28924)2.2.4—RESEARCH FACULTY – NORMAN CAMPUSThe research faculty position is a non-tenure-track, renewable term appointment at the rank <strong>of</strong>assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor, or pr<strong>of</strong>essor whose compensation is generated by grants and/orcontracts. This track is used to recruit and retain top research scholars to support and enhance the majorresearch programs and initiatives at the University. Candidates for these positions must demonstratesignificant capability or potential both to conduct high quality research and to obtain external funds. Theprimary responsibilities <strong>of</strong> these faculty will be research; creative/scholarly activity and research-relatedactivities such as proposal writing, project management and teaching; and service and public outreachspecifically linked to their research programs (for example, supervision <strong>of</strong> graduate students and servicefor pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations). Notwithstanding the term <strong>of</strong> the appointment, the existence <strong>of</strong> anyresearch pr<strong>of</strong>essor position is at all times subject to the availability <strong>of</strong> grant, contract, or bridge funding.The Norman Campus Faculty Handbook includes policies on recruitment and appointment <strong>of</strong>research faculty; salary, bridge funding, promotion, and raises for research faculty; caps onresearch faculty appointments; and impact evaluation.Since this policy covers a position devoted primarily to research, with some related teaching and servicepublic outreach responsibility, it is expected that both the Vice President for Research and the Senior VicePresident and Provost will have a determining role in the approval <strong>of</strong> personnel covered by this policy.A University research group is eligible for a research faculty position when it can document that thegroup has a research program that can bring in sufficient funds to pay all costs <strong>of</strong> the program plus those<strong>of</strong> the proposed position for at least three years without additional Educational & General Universityfunding.In addition, the academic unit with which the research faculty is most closely allied shall have policies inplace for recruiting, evaluating, and promoting research faculty at the ranks <strong>of</strong> assistant, associate, andfull research pr<strong>of</strong>essor. These policies shall be determined by the academic unit in conjunction with thedirector <strong>of</strong> the research program and Committee A and approved by the dean, Vice President forResearch, and Senior Vice President and Provost.Candidates for research faculty positions are to be recruited and appointed through a process similar tothat used for hiring other temporary faculty, except as provided in this policy. The director <strong>of</strong> theresearch group will request from the Senior Vice President and Provost, in consultation with the VicePresident for Research, permission to recruit for the position. The positions may be advertised inappropriate national publications, and applications shall be reviewed by a search committee chaired bythe director <strong>of</strong> the research group funding the position. The search committee shall also consist <strong>of</strong> tenuretrackor tenured faculty within the academic unit and at least one tenure-track or tenured faculty memberfrom outside the academic unit.
